That is one small example among many that are far beyond this simpleton’s range of vision. I always wanted to think it was simple too. Then I bump into a friend who sits on the BOD of this whole mess and my ears are bleeding within 5 minutes after hearing about all the crap they are dealing with.
I dont get it either…. but there it is…a crazy big political/legal/technical maelstrom with no simple answer. Of course things can and will change over time. None us us know which direction this will all go. But if you are waiting for real change, take your 10 years and triple it.
BTW, last time I checked the cable companies still owned the direct route to the highest bandwith in my house.
PSS-In 1999 I took a non-stop flight from Newark NJ to SD. I sat next to Michael Robertson for about 5 hours at the height of MP3’s existence. I think he had just done Good Morning America or one of those shows.

ByTheOwner, from Canada, is interesting and I think similar models will be tested here…or they are being tested. I have seem some new signs for assisted for sale by owner companies, but haven’t looked into them yet.
I did read a little about the ByTheOwner in Canada. The seller’s publish their phone numbers and schedule viewings directly with buyers. Professional services are on a pay per use basis(Which is what I would like to see). http://bytheowner.com/
The MLS in nothing sacred for any of the reasons mentioned… or any other that I can think of. Craigslist warns people advertising housing of the need to know what you are doing and saying with respect to housing laws. Average FSBO’s and “Joe landlords” seem to manage.
Having the seller obligated to a big commission while the buyer gets “free representation” is a huge problem. Buyers really are not incentivized to do anything but use a Realtor. This creates a vicious cycle in which sellers are held hostage for ransom.
I am not an expert on any of this but the expensive and ridiculous inefficiencies are a pain.
