Having lived in both types, I prefer single due to (1) no stairs to climb, (2) less noise because of no 2nd floor. Some of the 2-story homes are poorly constructed that you can heard running water or someone walking from the 1st floor. With that said, it is hard to find single story and the cost if much higher per sqft.

I’m a do-it-yourselfer, but sort of a wimp when it comes to heights.

My preference would be to have doors from every common area room and every bedroom and office ,library etc. open to the exterior. A big wrap around porch or courtyard would be ideal.Wrap for a country or view site and courtyard for urban living. A great room is really nice too.
