That’s actually not too bad. You know you might be able to call Home Depot or Lowe’s to see if they have any sort of tool rentals…..
Or… You could always leverage their generous return policy. I spend so much on Amazon and home Depot, I wouldn’t feel guilty borrowing an orbital sander for a few days….just saying …
May 17, 2023 at 12:35 PM #902254CoronitaParticipantIf you were closer I’d just loan you my sander. Or if you can wait, the next time I’m closer to where you are or we have a mutual friend in either of our hoods, we ca figure something out.
May 17, 2023 at 1:47 PM #902255sdrealtorParticipantSomehow I see an orbital sander coming into my life
May 18, 2023 at 1:09 PM #902288barnaby33ParticipantI have an orbital. Need a belt sander. Can’t do the HD buy and return thing, that’s dishonest. I’m taking it slow and really breathing in the fumes as I slowly remove sections. FLU just think of how distraught you’re going to feel for not participating in this project. Not only will you miss out on a true neighborhood beautification project, you could’ve helped the little guy!

May 18, 2023 at 4:20 PM #902289CoronitaParticipantI have a plethora of projects to work on. In all seriousness, home Depot does offer some tool rentals. You can see if they have a belt sander. Alternatively , you can try buying a drill attachment that turns your drill into a sander. You can buy a smaller 3 inch attachment
May 20, 2023 at 10:30 AM #902290sdduuuudeParticipant“Citrus strip” ?
That sounds like an environmentally conscious product that isn’t going to work. Buy the nuclear stuff. Or go to Arizona. That’s where I have to go to get good varnish and turpentine now.
California banned turpentine ?! It’s made from pine trees.
May 20, 2023 at 10:31 AM #902291sdduuuudeParticipantA nice sharp wood chisel might help in those corners.
May 20, 2023 at 2:36 PM #902292sdduuuudeParticipantDremel moto tool with the tiny little sanding wheels could help.
And an oscillating saw with the triangular sanding pads probably pretty useful.
May 20, 2023 at 2:45 PM #902293barnaby33ParticipantIf I stop now I can just call it rustic/chic right?
May 21, 2023 at 10:24 AM #902294CoronitaParticipantLooking good! See, that wasn’t so bad. And when you’re finally done, you’ll be happy you did it all yourself. Take the door lock off and clean around the door lock. Don’t be lazy.
Go Josh , Go!
May 21, 2023 at 10:26 AM #902295CoronitaParticipant…file this under ” hey, I know of a guy that’s really good a stripping paint from wood doors…” Could be an interesting side gig…
We’ll call you “The Mobile Stripper”
🤣
May 21, 2023 at 10:32 AM #902296CoronitaParticipantJosh, next to top left hinge and on the lower part of the door, is that wood filler/putty or just paint? If it’s wood filler/putty, it might be hiding some imperfection in the door. That could be an issue if you plan on just staining the door. I’d get a small pick and pick off some of that fto see how deep it goes before doing any additional work. If it goes too deep, you might reevaluate whether to stain the door versus paint.
May 21, 2023 at 11:36 AM #902297barnaby33ParticipantStill a bit of paint (though there may be wood filler as well). I’ll do the stripping around/under the lock with the sander when I pull the door off. I’m trying to do as much as possible before pulling the door as I assume I’ll have to do it more than once but would like to do it as few times as possible.
