I left San Diego after nearly 30 years of off and on living. I moved to Monterey and really enjoy the slower pace. San Diego is for youth like back in 81 when I was 25. 1981 was a lot different. Larry Himmel was mocking Tierrasanta and Poway….North country. It was time to leave. Consolidation of the Military was a big change. Criminal conduct on hte streets was the next. Just what the missus and I saw as offensive behavior on the streets that was the new norm. We rarely ventured out at night.
In CenCal we enjoy the bay area. Monterey isn’t exactly slacker territory either. The weather season is nice too. You’ll notice the lack of sprinkler systems. The Mofo’s in Socal are STEALING our water.
Food is delicious too. All of us seem to love the wine and food. So many good resturaunts to eat at. I’m a burrito fanatic and the Mexican groceries up here are killer. Field workers are a hardy bunch. If we miss San Diego we go to Wal-Mart and the mall to people watch. It’s much more relaxed….AND THAT’S THE HARD PART…..just slowing down and enjoying the “vibe”. I miss San DIego’s weather and we visit often but I’m not like coming over the grapevine and listening to the radio change in attitude. The last time we visited I swore to my wife we were right for leaving. One saying I had that really has hit home was in San Diego you were on an island….LA on the north Desert to the east and Mexico to the south. Of course the ocean to the west if you could get there without the shakedown by the coast guard and the navy. Monterey Bay is killer. AND I can go north to the redwoods or SF East to Yosemite, Tahoe, Wildlife refuges, and South on 1 to well south on 1! Good Luck to you and I know the San Diego memory will be a special time in your life. You just outgrow it. BTW I’m from Iowa and love Minnesota and Illinois and Missouri. I consider my life a success with my life in San Diego. Just ready for a new kind of adventure!October 28, 2011 at 5:55 PM #731525tugg49ParticipantI left San Diego after nearly 30 years of off and on living. You can’t just take a s. Californian straight to mn, the culture and weather shock can be lethal. At least lethal to a wife’s happiness.[/quote]
So, this post:
was about northern california kids?
October 29, 2011 at 7:48 AM #731575jstoeszParticipantno, where were just down there in SD last weekend. I was definitely referring to the s. california species of rat. That thread was intended to be more of a joke though. I wore some pretty dumb looking clothes myself.
October 29, 2011 at 7:54 AM #731576jstoeszParticipanttug, thanks for your post.
I know we will be happy wherever we are. Hell, I was not thrilled to move to SD the first time. Once, I figured out that I could live on a sailboat, I was onboard (so to speak). Point is, you can always carve out your niche that suits you wherever you live and be content with whatever life gives you.
October 30, 2011 at 4:25 AM #731627NewtoSanDiegoGuestYes, I’m thinking too about moving out of San Diego. Way too liberal here, sick of the Prius driving enviro wackos. Michelle B is my kind of people. She still would make a great President. Too bad this may not be her year. We need leaders like her, I envy Minnesota.
The weather out here is tough to beat though. I’m liking the low heating bills out here have been low, doesn’t offset the higher housing costs but sure helps. When I lived out in the cold climes my older house had oil heat, insulation not great and I was shelling out $500+ month during winter. If we could combine the nice weather with the free market, deregulated climate like Texas, I would be in heaven.
Whet areas would you recommend? I gotta make a trip out there and scope it out.
God speed
October 30, 2011 at 9:24 AM #731631clearfundParticipantAfter 42 years in OC/SD (SD since 87) we moved out of SD, out ofCA, and to Colorado. One hour north of Denver to Fort Collins.
It was a perfect fit for us to slow life down for the kids and add seasons, fishing, boating, skiing, and all around 90% of people appear to have self-selected to be here by choice vs. a job. Thus, its a the most friendly, neighborly place I’ve ever been.
different strokes for different folks.
October 30, 2011 at 10:52 AM #731633bob2007Participantjstoesz, value is obviously varies by person, but those houses you referenced are WAY WAY less than what I had expected. Even if you say 2000 sq ft in stead of 1500, its on a tiny lot with ONE bathroom. I’ve had apartments with two. I am from the midwest, but its been a long time. I would have thought you trade-off would have been more like 2-3 acres, 3000 to 4000 sq ft (since your living inside half the year). Out in the woods or on a lake (lots of them in MN), etc.
Lets not even get into the fact is going on 100 years old and probably has heating issues during the 6+ month of cold weather. If you even have to refer to “finished basement” as part of a necessary living space instead of a bonus/fun room to have, your way outside of my expectations. Holy cr*p dude, you wife must be dying out there.
I’m not saying don’t move out of SD. In fact, I think that is the right decision for many. I’m just saying that from your posts it would appear YOUR reasons are financial, and the numbers/value would not add up for many.

What does driving Prius have to do with being a liberal wacko? There are many people who like to drive a car that is environmentally friendly who are not liberals. BTW, I’m glad that Michelle B won’t be elected-she will be a disaster for our nation.

Wow, I didn’t know you moved, clearfund. That sounds like an awesome lifestyle for your family! Congratulations on the new home.
What was it that led you to leave SD/CA? From what I understand from your various posts, it probably wasn’t money. Was it family, lifestyle, or just wanting a lower cost of living irrepective of “ability to pay”?
Enjoy your new home! π
October 30, 2011 at 5:06 PM #731653clearfundParticipantIt was all of the above. With small kids, we wanted a smaller town life for them to grow up in vs. the So CA pace of life.
Have never felt so unstressed in life. Last week we had a 9″ snowstorm on Wednesday, and today it was was warm sunny and the snow is 90% gone. Have never seen the kids so happy playing in the yard/snow for 4 hours/day.
The fact that apples to apples housing (schools, neighbors, etc) is apx <50% of the comparable SD housing it awesome. More college fund savings!
October 30, 2011 at 5:34 PM #731654CA renterParticipantSounds perfect!
Glad to hear you are all enjoying it so much. π

Omaha, is probably more in line with your expectations.
Now if you want to buy a nice place outside of the city on acreage, I am sure you can find it for less than a couple hundred. I pointed at houses in one of the best parts of the city, but SW Minneapolis is not cheap for the Midwest.
For the record, the only reason why my wife is considering s. california is for love of her family and friends. She too has a hard time with the general culture, price, and pace of the place (amongst other things). Yes I like aliteration.
