ParticipantI wouldnt necessarily say that people in SD are better brought up but it sounds like you ran into some of the local trash in Fishtown. You would find the same in Kensington (Philly Kensington not SD). Its a tough working class town and some neighborhoods are not where you would want to be during the day let alone at night.
With that said Philly is a great town. Society Hill, Rittenhouse Square, Olde City among others are great. Surrounding towns and suburbs also have much to offer. Its just those hard core lower class ethnic neighborhoods you need to be careful in.

Participant
That’s why you have dilapidated housing stock in the old neighborhoods.
Good point Brian. I can not believe sometimes that I am driving through a multimillion dollar neighborhood based on the condition of the homes. I figure either the owners are too poor after their absorbent principle to pay for basic maintenance…or they haven’t been outside their homes since the 70’s.

My Realtor is very diplomatic. She would say that a neighborhood is more or less up-and-coming, or more or less established than another.
Unfortunately, there is no equivalent of Piggington for Philadelphia. I wouldn’t mind people talking about neighborhoods and schools like we do here about San Diego.
Overall, the houses in Philly are cheaper than San Diego.
I still want to drive into Camden, NJ (during the day) to see if it’s as bad as people say it is. I think it’s fun to drive around and learn about real estate locations.
I bought a house in Philly which I’m renting to a friend and her roommate. Not a bad deal, I think.
