. . . Crap but in my price range.
– La Mesa
– Allied Gardens
jstoesz, I’m a little disappointed that there was only two communities here in your price range that you were interested in but thought the inventory available in them was crap.
If those other communities you listed were only “pipe dreams,” then they are fun to visit but not “reality” for you.
I was just polling you because your OP essentially states that you are leaving because you did not see yourself ever being able to purchase an acceptable property here to live in.
Kinda like an “exit poll.”
I’m not an ambassador for SD County or anything but if there are only two communities here that you would consider purchasing in and both are “crap,” then you are doing the right thing by relocating, imho.
If your jobs work out in Sac County, then I have no doubt you can find something more to your liking for what you want to pay (<$300K?) in either Sac, Placer or El Dorado Counties. This part of CA has historically been MUCH less expensive that coastal counties. When you begin shopping, you might even be shocked at what you can buy there that is within your price range.
I wish you and your spouse the best of luck in your new jobs!

– La Mesa
– Allied Gardens
Crap? Have you spent much time in these neighborhoods? Talk about sweet spots. I guess for a lot of folks, much of San Diego is “Undiscovered Country.” There are great streets and sections in Linda Vista, for example. Have you seen the view from a nice lot up there?
You’ve gotta know where to look and the rhythms of the neighborhoods.
Totally agree with your sentiment about the rhythms of the neighborhood. When we were looking for a rental in S/N Park, I was amazed at the difference a block makes.
There are nice streets in La Mesa and allied gardens, really nice streets. But on the whole, they are pretty junky. Especially when you consider what 400k buys there vs. anywhere outside of S. California. Its still twice as expensive as a similarly demographic neighborhood in Minneapolis (which is not a cheap house market by US standards btw).

November 10, 2010 at 1:36 PM #628889jstoeszParticipantThere are certainly nice parts of la mesa, right of La Mesa blvd for example.
Man did I love this house:
http://www.redfin.com/CA/La-Mesa/8001-Vista-Dr-91941/home/5489738
I wonder if the bones were good for that price, but man it is sweet! Our contemplated range was more like ~400k depending on it need of repair, and 20% down was pretty feasible. So it was possible to live in that second category and buy a little 3/2 fixer. But at the end of the day I would never feel good about spending that much money on a mortgage for a home that was…meh.
We were never really very serious in our thinking about LM or AG The traffic on the 8 blows, and it just didn’t have a good feel (whatever that means).
It just seems like in other places that I have lived and visited, I just got that good feel (the one that says, “yeah, I could live here”) for half the money. And paying twice what feels right is never going to work, unless helicopter Ben drops off a sack of money. In which case, Point Loma here I come.
