Approximately 7-10 states were major contributors to the housing bubble. Some of those had gains on the order of %300.
So far, the monetary and fiscal response has been reactive, trying to contain the economic collapse. They targeted, it seems to me, areas with the highest appreciation, in an attempt to keep these areas afloat.
The following question has been nagging me for some time now. Are the powers-that-be attempting to keep California, Florida, Nevada, Arizona, etc. housing prices at or near record (or current) levels for the foreseeable future or are they merely trying to soften the landing over a period of time? This, to me, seems a rather large question that, impacts especially, the responsible savers largely represented in this site. I’m still scratching my head on this one.
The banks and Wall Street would dearly love to keep making loans on overpriced real estate, especially if they are guaranteed that there will be no risk.
