ParticipantI grew up in the Shadowridge area along the Vista/Oceanside border and it was a nice place to grow up… if you like tract houses and master-planned communities.

ParticipantI live in Carlsbad (rent) and work in Oceanside. My job takes me through the Coastal corridor and just recently it has branched out through the east side traveling through from Oceanside to Escondido. Mostly, I am outdoors, on the ground looking at environmental issues, so I get to know the areas pretty well.
The prostitution that was referred to also took place in the lovely community of Calaveras Hills of Carlsbad (lots of canyons). It takes place throughout the county as well, Oceanside happened to be highlighted.
There are parts of Carlsbad that are quite literally a ghetto. These neighborhoods are just a few blocks from the beach and on the edge of Carlsbad Village.
Parts of Oceanside and Vista are rather scary. There are also some very nice areas with lovely homes for a fraction of the cost of Carlsbad. My friend owns a very nice place in a gated community of Rancho Del Oro. He is 2 miles from my place in Calavera Hills. He has a front patio with an ocean view.
While I admit I am a snob (variety of reasons) and am waiting to buy in Carlsbad, there are some very nice areas of Oceanside that are a great value. That is if you are not concerned with the schools your kids will attend……I don’t have kids, but do have schools as a consideration due to resale value. The High Schools in particular are known to be a bit rough in Oceanside.

This may be too personal but how old are you? I grew up in Vista and went to Vista but had a lot of friends who went to Rancho.
