I decided right then and there that I didn’t want a career in any field where my retirement could be revoked. To me, it is something a person earns due to their years of service and should not be revoke-able based on a future action.
Absent any other concern, basing your decision on a single anecdote you don’t even know is true is . . . odd. Hopefully the OP’s son has the common sense to conduct a bit more due diligence.
Not sure if you thought that response through well. I didn’t say I wouldn’t be a cop based on a single unconfirmed anecdote. I said that I wouldn’t choose a career where my pension could be revoked by a future action. I would certainly do my due diligence to see if the career had that potential issue before ruling it out.
I stand by that statement.
Fair enough. But, the only example you provided in support was if someone committed a crime after retiring. I’m not sure how many non-governmental jobs offer pensions. I’m self funded. And I doubt any career law enforcement officers like DEA, ATF, FBI, IRS, CHP, etc. genuinely worry about losing their pension on the off-chance they commit a crime after retiring.

Telling EVERYONE to learn to code (or law enforcement, or “plastics” like in The Graduate), regardless of who they are fuels more school debt for people who have no aptitude or true interest.
Something appealed to him about construction and management, so he should try to make it. He is young and unattached, can go wherever the work is. With oil prices going up and down, there is churn in layoff-hiring cycles on oil fields. Keystone canceled – green energy construction will pick up. Have him look up in which cow field windmills are going up. Look where any road project, even resurfacing is happening. Electric or gas utilities will have construction projects – find out who contractors are. Projects will go out for bid, so find out what company got awarded. That mechanism should have been covered in some class he took.
I have talked to lots of construction managers over the last decade. #1 qualification is showing up at the right place on time and sober. It is crazy how many guys wash out based on that alone.
Having brains and persistence, which he must have to get a degree will put him ahead of the pack for promotion from within, even if he gets his feet wet as a laborer or helper of a tradesman (pipe fitter, driller, blaster). It would give him a chance to figure out if this is what he really wants to do. Remote pay will be handy when he gets time off

I even hate that term.
I think a better term would be Social Media Shill.

first thing that came to mind,…
“To all you graduates, as you go out in the world, my advice to you is… Don’t go! It’s rough out there. Move back with your parents. Let them worry about it.”

the reason I mention this is because a few years ago the friends center sent out a request for help so went a few times to help dig a trench and another time to move/stack strawbales, etc.
