I tell you, most of what makes a wine good is the environment you’re in and the people you’re with. I can enjoy a $3 bottle with close friends or out on the town (or both!) every bit as much as sitting in front of the TV with a $40 bottle.

Current faves: Layer Cake (primitivo/zin.)
and a Sicilian red that I don’t remember the name of (Lemura?)
I looked in my wine cupboard… it’s Tasca d’Almerita Lamuri Nero d’Avola…. I really like this wine. Red label, Lamuri is in big letters,January 17, 2012 at 8:50 PM #736169sdrealtorParticipantIf you can enjoy a $3 bottle as much as a $40 bottle by all means drink the $3 bottle for as long as you feel that way.

Have Reisling with some spicy Thai food and you will be converted. Often its about knowing what food to drink with what wine.January 18, 2012 at 6:59 PM #736299barnaby33ParticipantDecent is sooo context relative. If I’m in San Diego, decent takes on the subtle tones of something that matches the food I’m going to eat and the company I’m going to keep without a splashy label and splashy price tag. Usually a decent white is 15 and will be either a German riesling, NZ Suav blanc or petit Chablis.
On the red side its something that isn’t an oaky fruit bomb that I can share with friends or drink by myself. Usually sub 20 and includes lesser known Cal cab, or cru bourgeois Bordeaux or even Borgogne (cheap burgundy). Aussie Shiraz can be a good option.
In either case decent means Wednesday night wine. Something I can open on wed whether by myself or with someone and not care if I finish the bottle.
In my current local its anything I can get that doesn’t burn my tongue on the way down!

January 18, 2012 at 7:10 PM #736302NotCrankyParticipant
Jacarandoso……Some reds we are enjoying right now include the Terlato Peak Series..Cardinals, Angels and Devils
Also really like Elyse Cabs and Zins.
There are others I can suggest but are winery or wine club purchases. PM if interested
Thanks for your earnest reply, and link, but I started this thread in jest because sdrealtor owes markmax33 a “decent” bottle of wine, and I wanted to see what piggs would suggest.

Some wines are better alone and some are made for food. Try a resiling with spicy Thai food and I’m sure you will see it. Italian wines are made specifically with the idea of having them with food. American wines are another story. Most are made to be drunk young and can stand alone without food.January 18, 2012 at 7:13 PM #736304sdrealtorParticipantThe winner was actually FSD.

Thanks for the wine tips, sounds good.I would look at that “Contest” thread closely, recall that until FSD became the “winner”, I was. Look at what time I “won”.

Not exactly what I said, but close.
I should have used $8 instead of $3 as I can’t recall drinking a $3 bottle in years.
But yeah, I certainly enjoy an $8 bottle with friends more than a $40 in front of the TV by myself. Going up in value only buys me a bit more enjoyment. But great surroundings can add a whole lot more…and actually make the wine taste a great deal better.

Great answer!General disposition prior and during drinking, however that gets optimized is really big in how quality a wine experience is… with rum, who cares about that shit?
