Way OT: Windshield Replacement?

JC, depending on the type of car, I would not go for the “cheapest windshield you can find”.

First, not all windshields are made alike. If you were to compare them side by side, you can tell some are thinner than others, though still technically meeting spec…

What this means is
1) if you buy a cheap glass (especially the ones from china), it’s very likely a small pebble flying on the freeway will very well end up putting a crack in your new windshield, much easier than your OEM glass. And then you will be cursing you need to shell out another $150 or so to replace that one.

2) Your windshield makes up a good portion of the structural integrity of your car, in the case you happen to flip your car over.

PPG is one of those companies that makes OEM glass and aftermarket, and that’s why it’s highly recommended. (it’s not just because it’s made in the u.s.). Just take a look at most new cars, and see a lot of domestic and import use PPG.

ok.ok.ok. i KNOW you are right. you got me with the safety argument. i am so not a car person. i am chick, but i drive a truck. it’s great and very reliable, but i spent next to nothing on it. (sometimes you really do get more than what you paid for!) i just called my installer back for a quote on th PPG. i am sure my parents would thank you 😉

Anyone know the cost of replacing a windshield with a GPS receiver ? My wife’s car has a windshield chip. Insurance company paid for the el cheapo epoxy filler repair waiving the deductible, but the small cracks seem to be reappearing. I’d like to replace it eventually.
