That is really a great way to shop neighborhoods.

I knew there was a reason I loved living in NYC so much! Now I have a word for it-“walkability!” Amazing that almost all the top walkable places are old east coast neighborhoods (and SF which may as well be an east coast city, it has the same feel) built before cars became so prevalent. There is a history of New York class taught at Columbia and NYU and there are several required “walking tours.”

Back on topic: we are getting ready to head back for a wild weekend in SF, which is head and shoulders the best walking city in CA. Try the walking tour from Market Street to Fisherman’s Wharf. What a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. Especially this time of year.

The ratings should be taken with a grain of salt though (and they detail the deficiencies on their site.) For example, it seems part of CMR is rated well because of the big shopping center there, but I don’t see a lot of pedestrian through traffic when I’m in that area; it’s still very car oriented.
