The force majeure of democratic elections, is a media focus on superficialities and irrelevances. Arguments with full disclosure of all the facts, as they are known, followed by a balanced juxtaposition of views, is conspicuous by its absence. Fickle preferences over personality, race, and gender, are a product of a consumer society spoon fed on a diet of soap operas and personal gratification. Why is this? Policies are complex and require considerable expertise and knowledge to fully understand. Do the media and politicians deliberately skirt the issues, because we are too dumb to understand them? Maybe, but even they disagree on outcomes, which ultimately shape preferences. So how can voters be expected to vote with any sense of confidence? An individual’s right to free expression and the free flow of ideas, creates an awful lot of opinion, but how much of that opinion is based on rational argument, and to what extent can it be instilled into a confident vote? Do we make decisions in a vacuum, a kind of stabbing in the dark, that asserts our individualism, bouncing off other’s views like pachinko? How much does bias, prejudice, emotion, and spontaneity play a part in a vote cast? And ultimately, can we trust that all these discrepancies are somehow filtered out, and thus produce a result that we want, moreover is needed? There is no doubt in mind that education is one of the keys?
