One of my best friends since childhood is selling his place. Youngest just graduated high school. Moving to Florida. His house would be in your wheelhouse

I can’t stop thinking about nh and VT. We were hiking on hot days, mid 80s, but in the forest, shade, moisture, felt crisp even in midday.
I go hiking or riding in so cal and I’m baking alive.
I went to school there and survived winters…
I want to be from where fucking Bernie Sanders is governor!!!

Gorgeous. Built in 1842!
July 14, 2021 at 11:07 PM #822452sdrealtorParticipantMy friend has been there many years. Spent a bunch of years traveling the world on a bike after college and living in youth hostels. Came back to Philly, saw no youth hostels and opened one. Operated it for several years and married one of his international guest travelers. Sold it. He lived a very scaredylike life

Yes its a cool house. He had a great neighborhood bar and grill for years he operated nearby. His dad was a big time builder where we grew up and he did a bunch of the work in restoring it himself. But he’s tired of the cold and his youngest graduated high school and he’ll be off on his own. He wants to get back to a warmer climate near friends and family and he wants to be able to golf a few times a week. He’s been up there over 20 years and is ready for a change

I want to snowshoe and get a Subaru. I feel like life might’ve been better in Vermont. This feeling is likely bullshit. It is both perfect, and a disaster, right here.
July 16, 2021 at 10:16 AM #822531flyerParticipantMaybe a second home there, scaredy, and/or visit friends? We’ll never leave CA completely, but also live elsewhere. The world has lots of beautiful places.
We love New England, and visit friends who live in those areas often. Particularly enjoy the Lake Sunapee area in NH. Alton Bay is also a great place.

I’d worry about squatters.
July 16, 2021 at 10:52 AM #822533The-ShovelerParticipantIMO having second homes in other states just becomes a maintenance nightmare (especially someplace with extreme weather like VT).
Better just get a month or two rental maybe at least at first.
July 16, 2021 at 12:09 PM #822534flyerParticipantHaven’t had the problems mentioned where we are, since we have people who check on things, and the properties are not in extreme weather locations, but understand the concerns. We bought these places when they were extremely inexpensive. Picked up a lot during the previous downturn, and prior. Don’t know if I’d do it today.
Agree, buying another residence in an extreme weather location could become a nightmare, that’s why we visit friends for extended periods of time in those areas, and that, or renting, might be your best bet, scaredy. Either way–enjoy!
