Yeah, you’re right… like some kind of amnesia.
October 18, 2006 at 6:50 AM #37981PDParticipantI have spend the last five minutes looking for a forum topic so I could post a link. No wonder I can’t find it. Whew!!! It is a relief to know I wasn’t imagining things…
October 18, 2006 at 12:34 PM #37996powaysellerParticipantThis is one of the slowest websites I’ve ever encoutered; maybe because it’s free? I’m sure if we all made a donation to piggington, he would have a reason to upgrade to a better server. Anyway vrudny, your posts are *not* worthless; I love your posts. They add value to my life.
My neighbor just listed her 3/2.5 townhouse, giving us 3 listings of 3/2.5 1875 sq ft townhouses next to each other! She was smart and undercut the older listings in price. So we’ve got $530K, $499K, $495K. This is going to be very interesting.
October 18, 2006 at 2:06 PM #38003brookeKeymasterAll we can tell so far is that some database tables became corrupted. It’s not clear why this would have wiped out prior data like that. If someone (our ISP) restored the db from a prior version, that is news to us.
We have fixed the corrupted tables and are trying to find out why the data would have disappeared and whether it can be recovered. Many apologies to the people whose posts were lost. We will try to get them back but I have a feeling they may be lost for good.

PS – We are back from vacation and Rich will have some new content up soon.
October 18, 2006 at 6:49 PM #38012brookeKeymasterUpdate: it turns out that there was a hardware failure last night and (like vrudny suggested) our ISP had to restore the database from a 2-day old backup. That explains the missing 2 days of data. The corrupted tables I mentioned earlier were actually a symptom and not the cause of the problem.
Sorry again for those whose content was deleted.

October 18, 2006 at 9:53 PM #38020lewmanParticipantEven when I’m logged in, in some threads, it shows “reply” and i can respond. Sometimes even after i’m logged in, it still shows “login to reply” at the bottom and when I tried to login again it gives me a page not found. Very annoying … and of course it’s usually the ones I want to respond to that gives me the problem … any suggested solution ?
October 18, 2006 at 10:22 PM #38023lindismithParticipantRich has explained it as a caching problem, whereby your computer ‘helpfully’ remembers what the page should look like, and unhelpfully forgets to show the link to post a reply.
He suggested hitting the refresh button on your browser, which sometimes works for me, and sometimes doesn’t. I hit it numerous times, and then finally it does work.
If you really can’t get in, the go up to Tools and clear your cache. Then hit refresh.
October 18, 2006 at 10:38 PM #38024lewmanParticipantthanks; will give it a go next time it acts up on me
October 18, 2006 at 10:59 PM #38025greekfireParticipantBrooke,
I think you can run a cron job to do auto backups of your Drupal MySQL database. I have not done this yet myself, but have been meaning to do so. If you find an easy way to do it, let me know.
October 18, 2006 at 11:11 PM #38026brookeKeymasterI think you could use the mysqldump command to do this. But in our case the database is pretty big at this point so we’ve just been doing weekly backups.
thanks,
BrookeOctober 18, 2006 at 11:21 PM #38027sdcellarParticipantRich and Brooke–
Thanks for the explanation.
You’d think for the kind of money we’re paying here for the Professor’s services, we’d get some kind of fail-safe triple backup system with our data safe and simultaneously secure in San Diego, Tokyo, and Sao Paolo.
Okay, so I was able to get a few other things accomplished over the two days and nobody really got hurt. Although, I haven’t heard much from powayseller since the “incident”. PS– You okay?!
Anyway, really appreciate the site and everything you’ve done here!
October 19, 2006 at 2:20 AM #38029powaysellerParticipantsdcellar, I’m still here, but have been busy with family visits and some volunteer work.
October 20, 2006 at 1:20 PM #38090bubba99ParticipantI have found the if I use the login template on the left hand side of the page, I don’t have the “reply” type of issue where it looks like the user has not logged in
