No, I said the entire food system in China is uncivilized
That’s not what you said. you said eating snakes is uncivilized:
People initially got it from eatting snakes. Come on now, really? Geesh. Talk about uncivilized.
And what might have led you to think that I agree with everything Republicans say and do? And I’ll ask again, what does how this thing that the Republicans are trying to do (as outlandish as it is) have anything to do with what is going on in China right now?
You know what. I don’t care. You and yellow fever cheerleader Brian can go to china, get sick for all I care.
You are crazy if you comparing the Chinese government to the Republicans… The worst Republicans and Progressives are still light years ahead of the shit that goes on in China.
I’m not comparing the Chinese government to the republicans. I’m saying that if you think eating uninspected food is uncivilized, you should disagree with republicans’ attempts to leave oversight of inspection to those who can profit from the lack thereof.
And what might have led you to think that I agree with everything Republicans say and do? And I’ll ask again, what does how this thing that the Republicans are trying to do (as outlandish as it is) have anything to do with what is going on in China right now to have been brought up in this context in this thread? Why not bring up the leaded water in Flint, Michigan while we are at it?
Totally bizarre.
January 23, 2020 at 9:47 PM #814447CoronitaParticipantI don’t know, but some of you sure seem hell bent on trying to pick a fight on Piggington over anything republican in any sort of context imho. Also bizarre
January 23, 2020 at 10:04 PM #814448outtamojoParticipantI got taken in by the Ebola doomsayers…sniff…
January 23, 2020 at 10:35 PM #814449ocrenterParticipant
I think we should temporarily ban travelers to and from China. For the safety of people in the US. It’s the right thing to do, and other countries are already thinking of doing similar things. This is potentially a public health crisis.
You know how people got this right? People initially got it from eatting snakes. Come on now, really? Geesh. Talk about uncivilized. Just one more fxcked up thing to come out of China. It figures.
Likely increased consumption of these wild animals after the CCP botched the handling of the swine flu epidemic, underreported the severity, which resulted in extreme price hike of pork.
This coronravirus outbreak started in December, but only came to light because of foreign cases.
What an absolute mess!

I think you guys are missing the point. The analogy would be if you caught a bunch of squirrels or wild rabbits in your backyard, killed them, and took them to the local swap meet to sell them as food without any sort of inspection.
If the current republican administration has its way, some of the responsibility for slaughterhouse food safety will be transferred to those who could save (make more) money by cutting corners. Which could be as (or more) dangerous than (obviously far more widespread than) selling wild squirrels at the market.
Efficient government is good. Slashing government in mindless pursuit of small government is not.
really zk? Another political bent ? We are so far away from the (lack of ) food safety in China it’s not even close. not by a long mile.
Watch
There’s a reason why some Chinese people here refuse to buy any food that was made in China or from China
Agree. This is the main reason why they had the Shanghai Costco stampede.
January 23, 2020 at 11:17 PM #814451MyriadParticipantFood safety and honest reporting of issues is one area China hasn’t quite figured out yet.
On the other hand, they are building a 1000 person quarantine facility in 6 days. And what other government can just lock down 8 cities with 20+M people right before The major holiday. But, yeah, people still go down to HK to buy as much foreign milk powder as possible. Not sure if there is still a limit of 2 bags.
The problem isn’t eating the weird animals. As long as they are inspected, kept in segregated and clean conditions, and managed properly. The issue is when all the animals are mixed together in small closed areas such as a market where the killing happens and things like blood get intermixed.
January 24, 2020 at 4:30 AM #814452FlyerInHiGuestFlu, I wasn’t making any comparison with regard to food safety. My point was that people eat different animals all over the world.
I’m disappointed in you, flu. I expected you to talk about how to make money.
I have tenants from China and the wife works in retail arbitrage. During Black Friday she shipped 1000 boxes to China. Now she’s sending masks to China. Online retail in China is on fire. Her WeChat feed is all about brand name products people want.

Med students are taught that they need to multiply by 3 on quantity reported by alcoholics.
Epidemiologists are realizing they need to multiply by 20 on death toll reported by China.
January 24, 2020 at 6:55 AM #814455The-ShovelerParticipantSo basically China is now trying to quarantine an area and a population the size of California.
China has extended its travel ban to 13 cities, covering 35 million people. (CNBC & NY Times)
* CDC: Level 3 health warning for coronavirus; State Department: Level 2 travel advisory (CNBC)
* China to build 1000-bed hospital over weekend (Reuters)Walt Disney’s (DIS) Shanghai Disney Resort will be closed until further notice to help China stop the spread of the flu-like virus, costing the theme park operator revenue during the country’s biggest holiday season. China is on a seven-day Lunar New Year holiday, a period when the Shanghai Disney park would be usually packed with tourists. (Reuters)
January 24, 2020 at 8:25 AM #814456FlyerInHiGuestFrom a logistics and industrial engineering perspective, the quarantine and containment are amazing. I want to see the hospital built in 6 days.

Of course, just because you (seem to) support the republican party in general doesn’t mean you support all their policies. If you think eating uninspected food is uncivilized, it seems like you’d be against that particular proposal.

And what might have led you to think that I agree with everything Republicans say and do?

You’re not reading very carefully.

It was mildly off topic. No need to get your panties in a wad.
It was relevant, tangentially at best, because you have said (or implied…or maybe I inferred) that you are for smaller government. But in this thread you seemed to be quite taken aback by people eating uninspected food. I merely pointed out that the party you seem to support is taking steps in a direction that could lead to millions of Americans eating uninspected food.
January 24, 2020 at 2:28 PM #814458CoronitaParticipantDespite MSM reporting the infection is around 900, my local sources abroad are telling me confirmed cases are closer to 4000 right now. And unconfirmed cases conceivably is closer to 10k. That sort of explains the lockdown on those cities in China so quickly. The numbers, unsurprisongly, are underreported.
January 24, 2020 at 4:26 PM #814459MyriadParticipantWould not be surprised if a significant portion of China’s cities will restrict intercity travel before this is over.
