I think the only ones really paranoid about the Coronavirus here are other Asian people, specifically middle age and older Chinese and they are the worst ones in discriminating against themselves.
Ranch 99 is a ghost town these days. And much of there food is on buy one get one free. lol. And most of the cashiers now are no longer Chinese. They are either Latino or Vietnamese. And the parking lot is empty.
My kid had a cold and recovered from it and had a cough, and my kid’s private Chinese language tutor called me and asked if she could skip classes for two weeks. She didn’t want to risk geting the Coronavirus. I’m not kidding. My kid’s friend that attends Chinese school in the weekend mentioned parents are asking if they can do a video conference based class instead of attending in person.
And when my kid wants to hang out with other Chinese friends or had a school project, their parents call me and ask if I’ve been to China. None of her non-chinese friends’ parents have ever called me for the same reason. Go figure..
Probably because the middle age and up crowd watching news from Chinese language media sources, which is currently on Coronavirus coverage 24/7.

Glad you thought it was funny too. So sad it’s funny. People are that paranoid.
I actually got lectured by a Chinese woman a few days ago. She was really paranoid about the Coronavirus in SD and asked what can we do in San Diego to prevent this. I said, jokingly, if you really are concerned, do what other Asian people are doing and avoid places where Asians congregate and if you do need to go to those places, wear a mask. Oh my God, did I get an earful of being a racist , how I’m upsetting the Asian community by saying this…..And then I asked, well what part that I’m saying (half jokingly) are other Asians not actually putting into practice….and BTW when was the last time you went to ranch 99. Dead silence. She never said anything again.
I don’t mind, I sort of like being able to go to Ranch 99 on Saturday without fighting for a parking spot. And man, all that buy one get one free food is awesome!
Anyway, I’m adding more to my Gilead stock position today. I feel sort of bad doing so, but hey if people are going to run scared shitless about this, there’s room for speculation. That, and hopefully I can unload some of my gold bullion to the coin shops this week near $1700/ounce. Just $30/ounce go!
February 24, 2020 at 9:16 AM #814896The-ShovelerParticipantIMO containment is lost at this point.
February 24, 2020 at 9:32 AM #814898ltsdddParticipantyup…people have been quarantined for a 14-day period…but doctors now have found at least one person who carried the virus for at least 19 days without symptoms, and of course got a few people infected along the way.
February 24, 2020 at 11:08 AM #814906The-ShovelerParticipantSeems like china is about to give up,
everyone BACK TO WORK!!At some point you just have to go back to some semblance of normal.

Well, it’s still contained on EarthFebruary 24, 2020 at 12:35 PM #814910ucodegenParticipant
lol

The language they are speaking is Thai. That is a bit funny, though there is also a serious side..I have been watching the Covid-19 outbreak and watching the ‘death rate’. In China the death rate is about 2345/76288 = 3.0% of known infections. Iran having real bad Covid-19 problem; their death rate is significantly higher than China at 12/61=19.67% (was 12/47=25.5%). Italy 6/229 = 2.62%, South Korea at 7/833 or 0.84%(must be the garlic). Total average is about 2622/79407 = 3.3%. NOTE: numbers are quickly changing.
Ref site: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/publications.html
Summary: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nCoV/summary.htmlAge statistics on death rate:
- 80+ years = 14.8%
- 70-79 years = 8.0%
- 60-69 years = 3.6%
- 50-59 years = 1.3%
- 40-49 years = 0.4%
- 30-39 years = 0.2%
- 20-29 years = 0.2%
- 10-19 years = 0.2%
- 0-9 years = no fatalities

A person after my own heart… though I have a feeling that this drop may have a bit more ‘legs’ on it. The media has been drumming repeated ‘fear-fear-fear'(drama-drama-drama) into people and speculators have been periodically trying to attack the stock prices (shown by rapid drops followed by price recoveries within a matter of two days)February 24, 2020 at 1:14 PM #814913CoronitaParticipantWhat is interesting is the virus in Italy. That’s some explaining that needs to happen. The outbreak in Korea doesn’t surprise me because it’s primarily a religious group that had exposure in China. Japan cases are mainly from the cruise ship I think.
Still think US will be spared. I think we have a geographical advantage and less dense population.

Virus in Italy could be from a tourist from China.. but Iran??Maybe China’s under the table dealings with Iran to avoid the Embargo is now cursing Iran?
I think we will ‘largely’ be spared. I think the US has yet to play out. With the periodic asymptomatic behavior of this virus, it is hard to predict where problems would occur — they just ‘pop up’. I would be interested to know what causes some people to be asymptomatic. It is almost like they are immune.
February 24, 2020 at 2:37 PM #814915The-ShovelerParticipantThere are also cases now in Iraq, Afghanistan etc…
I imagine containment is not a thing there.
February 24, 2020 at 3:08 PM #814916CoronitaParticipantThere is one thing I was thinking. What if the primary transmission in places like the middle east isn’t human. What if it’s through animals.
I wonder if the Middle East cases came from imported meat from China.
And the other thing is, this virus supposedly originated in animals. What of the food chain in China is tainted? That food chain extends throughout Asia and Middle East and Parts of Europe.
Can the virus survive in dead meat and if so how long? China’s food supply is heavily unregulated (despite what they say).
February 24, 2020 at 4:07 PM #814918FlyerInHiGuestWhat if, what if, what if, when you don’t know. Sounds pretty negative to me, flu
February 24, 2020 at 4:30 PM #814919CoronitaParticipantit’s amazing once someone puts Brian in the defensive position, how few new posts get created on piggington 🙂
February 24, 2020 at 4:37 PM #814917The-ShovelerParticipantNot sure its true or not but it would make some sense of all the measures being taken around the world.
2019 coronavirus is 20 times deadlier than the seasonal flu
I imagine this translates to in places where there is not good access to (or overwhelmed) medical care and expensive equipment, the death rates will likely be higher.
