Participantrankandfile: You want to make it interesting? Pick a debatable topic and put it out there for discussion amongst the group. Pick something topical, but objective, and set some ground rules for participation.
You have some very sharp individuals that post here. I would be careful before casually throwing out that particular gauntlet (as regards your closing capabilities).
Given that we as of late have seemed to drift from the RE mainstream (discussing Ron Paul, gender roles, etc), I would pick something related to RE, but perhaps more geared towards monetary policy/monetarism, the influence of the FED and the repercussions of FED policy, etc, etc, etc. You get the drift.

ParticipantDon’t give us too much credit Allan, I don’t even understand the original question. Normally I’d vote for me but since I don’t get the purpose of the thread, I’ll pass.
The reality is that this is not an individual sport, it’s a team sport. Deciding who on team has thrown the most touchdowns is silly. We all have our position and our role. I look forward to certain people’s opinions but no one poster rules the roost. We have linebackers to take care of the trolls, offensive specialty players with specific skills for the technical questions, a fleet of quartebacks for seeing the field for what it is, insane special teams players and great fans. Me, I’m one of the kickers on this team (second string), extra points is my specialty but I’m terrible at tackling.
“Closer” is a baseball term, it’s football season right now, so let’s stay topical.

ParticipantTG: Speaking of football (trying to remain topical, doncha know), what the you-know-what is up with your Chargers? Every time I think I have this team figured out, they go in the opposite direction.
I watched last night’s game against the Broncos (an admittedly weak foe) and saw an absolutely dominating defense. The offense left something to be desired, but WR play is definitely better and LT is looking like his former scary self. I think the Jags and the Chargers might be the most dangerous teams in the AFC playoffs right now, due to their defenses (and the Jags bring the hat) and ability to run the ball.
And, by the way, Merry Christmas to you and Rustico. It has been a peach getting to know you guys.

Participantrankandfile it happens. I posted way back when about the Transfer Tax which in my opinion is an OUTRAGE and it got 0 responses… Most likely the most discussed topics are those that stir emotions.

I am not sold on the bolts yet. Rivers still has not developed to the point where he can look off his primary receiver nor has he commanded the art of getting the team to the line with much time on the play clock. In reality the beatdown they give to the likes of the Chiefs, Lions, Ravens, Broncos, and other clunker teams does not convince me of much. The Titans game was won due to a missed call by the officials (Chambers trapping a poorly thrown pass) while the Colts game was won by an act of God.
I agree that winning on Sunday in this league is quite difficult and winning 10-11 games does distinguish a team to be “better” then the rest of the muck. While the Chargers D has played better it has not faced an exceptional QB sans the Colts game or a team with a dynamic offense. Nor can they muster much of a rush with the base 4 and must always send at least another LB or DB in to get any heat on. Which is okay by me as long as they keep disguising it.
I am pretty concerned about playing the Brownies but I would rather face them then the Jags. It is a winnable game if Rivers doesn’t turn the ball over. After that though, to even fathom that they can go on the road and beat Indy or the Brady’s akin to finding a 500k home in Carmel Valley. They may have a small chance at Indy simply because they have won there and on turf our outside rush is pretty damn quick.
Once we go to Foxboro though…. yikes…

ParticipantSDR: Couple of quick observations. First, I’ve played and coached a lot of football, and I will tell you that God shows up an awful lot. More games than you would believe are decided by calls (bad and good), as well as those plays that seem either impossible or unbelievable (Vinatieri ganking that kick against the Chargers). I had a coach tell me one time that football games are won by the team making less mistakes and with the refs on their side.
Second, I am believing less and less in the Patsie’s invincibility. I think Billick and Baltimore really exposed the age and durability of the NE linebacking corps when they dosed them heavily with McGahee and that running attack. Against either the Jags or the Chargers, I think NE has a problem. I think Belichick has gotten into a lot of coaches’ heads this year, and I honestly think Indy had them cold earlier this year, but blew it late in the game. I also think that San Diego has Indy’s number, and you guys match up better than you realize, especially if you can rattle Manning.
On an unrelated note, Rivers needs to grow up. That nonsense with Cutler during last night’s game was childish. I understand the AFC West rivalry (I am a Raiders fan, after all), but what was that?

Participant(Just so everyone knows this is an offtopic thread and we apologize for hijacking it into football, we can’t help ourselves and in a few weeks it will stop for 8 months, so bear with us).
SD, I remember in the preseason right after the moss trade you thought the patsies would be hard to beat or unbeatable (you were right), the chargers don’t stand much of a chance but it would really be good for them to win one playoff game, the downside is that it will seal our fate with Norv.
I’m not sold on them to win the superbowl but they should win one, maybe two playoff games. They are too young and emotional and do not have any strength at the helm. When it goes their way it goes well, when something goes wrong, they fold. This team needs strong leadership, it was depressing to see Parcels pack for Miami when he could have been our savior. The Browns are pretty much the same team as the chargers(emotion, talent and weak coaching) and the only one they can beat. The Jags bring too much pressure and Rivers doesn’t improvise well, Manning or Brady are better suited to face the jags. Depending on the Tenn/Indy game, the Browns may not make the playoffs and we will face Tennesee who the Chargers can beat. The Chargers also match up well against Pittsburgh but won’t see them the way the seedings are shaping up. I’m just glad they pulled out of their funk and look respectable, even if it was against some weak teams. It’s an emotional game, they are peaking at the right time and are riding high on emotion, so anything is possible. The Pats will win it all and go undefeated, the Chargers just need to end up a top five team so they can be in position next year when the pats melt down in the offseason from all the hype.

ParticipantIt's Christmas day, I am bored, and thought I'd go snooping on piggington.com. I clicked on this thread for no particular reason. I started reading from the latest thread (as I usually do) and worked my way backwards. I began to see some earlier references to my name and thought I'd investigate further back in time. I got to the first post of the thread and noticed that it was created by me. I must have been either super drunk, super tired, or both, but I totally forgot about creating this thread! Has that ever happened to anyone else?
Regarding football, if the Bolts win one playoff game, the decision to replace Marty will be confirmed. If not, there will be controversy. Indy looks very strong and should give the Patriots a tough time in the AFC. The Jags are playing really well right now, but have done so in past years and laid an egg in the playoffs. The Patriots have the greatest challenge – they have the most to lose. Going 16-0 is meaningless if they don't at least make the Super Bowl.

I still think you are over-rating the Patriots. Indy is better than they are given credit for, and the Chargers might surprise you (yes, this is a Raiders fan saying this). One thing to consider about Norv Turner: In both DC and Oakland, he was not given a team as talented as this one.

Participantrankandfile it happens. I posted way back when about the Transfer Tax which in my opinion is an OUTRAGE and it got 0 responses… Most likely the most discussed topics are those that stir emotions.
Allan/TG
Once we go to Foxboro though…. yikes…
