TG: I follow economic and demographic indicators very closely, and you’ve just exposed a terrific one: Tooth Count by state.
From the rankings, it looks like a very reliable indicator of health and socioeconomic well-being. Except I’m a little surprised CA is ranked so high–I would have guessed we would fall somewhere in the middle.
Econ, I was tired and didn’t research it very hard but in the past I’ve seen studies on the atc (average tooth count) by age bracket per state and dentists per 1000 residents. Cali was always near the top but one state that wasn’t on the list I posted that is always at the top is Hawaii, which is suprising, since that is where a lot of sugar is produced. Another suprising thing is that the southeastern states that ranked high in the “toothless by 65” study also had tooth counts in the single digits at something like 45 years of age. Demographics may be skewed because the top states were also the ones who had been flouridizing their water for decades. My post was meant more of a joke but it is an interesting demographic angle.

February 22, 2009 at 12:47 PM #352113AnonymousGuestwow! π my comment sparked such outrage within 12 hours that i kind of feel like i need to defend myself!
first of all, let me apologize for coming across as another stephen fowler- i’m actually (i think) a very nice guy who’s generally easy to get along with. i didn’t mention my education level to establish any sort of superiority; it was merely pride at this accomplishment- I’m sure you all can relate to happiness at achieving a goal of yours. and i definitely do NOT feel that i’m better than anyone simply because i enjoy art, literature, etc.; remember, the point of that post was to explain why i don’t like san diego, and my reason was that i can’t find very many enjoyable people who are into the things i’m into. i’m contrasting this with other cities i’ve visited or lived in.
second, i need to defend my character. i’m hardly a cloistered grad student, and even if i were, my opinion still matters and reflects some sort of experience. also, just because i criticize a city does NOT mean i had the “proverbial sand-kicked-in-face”. i don’t think that is the only reason one would dislike a city. furthermore, i was describing my experiences here, and i think it’s humorous that one would think these experiences resemble a baywatch episode.
oh, and to the moron brought up the number of teeth of each state: by saying this you are showing your ignorance about the socio-historical situation of the Appalachian region, and your argument has nothing to do with what i said. i was asserting the fact that i was also dissatisfied in kentucky, but that i was even more comfortable there than in san diego. i was not saying that kentucky is any more cultured than here, or saying that californians are vain for brushing their teeth. at the same time that i hate san diego, i actually love california.
i’m sure there’s more i can say, but i don’t think anyone here actually will want to read it.

February 22, 2009 at 12:59 PM #352133NavydocParticipantWow. I’ve been reading and actively participating in discussions on this site for almost 2 years now, and I think this is the first insult I’ve seen hurled at TG. Imagine, one of our most salient and amusing authors described as a moron! And by someone who has only been posting for 1 day! Burns, you clearly havn’t been lurking long enough on this site, because TG’s post was clearly in character, where he always injects a little humor, often off-color.
I love San Diego for the people too, and while there aren’t many museums here, if they called me tonight and told me they were changing my orders from Bethesda to San Diego I think we’d throw a party. I’ve been living in LA for almost three years now and I have no love at all for this city. I wonder how LA would score on your criteria. People love places for different reasons, and if you don’t care for San Diego you can have my spot at Bethesda. How are your obstetric skills?
