I heard the article. Please note that they made a reference to how 90k in Atlanta = 145k in LA. So, middle class in San Diego is not the same as the national average.

Median income for SD:
The median income for a household in the city was $45,733, and the median income for a family was $53,060.
So anyway, the middle class in San Diego is doing *worse* than the middle class in Atlanta. And thats with 10+ years of bullsh!t bubble growth in the county.
