To talk of Republican-this or Democrat-that is neither here nor there at this stage in the game and is counter-productive IMHO. It is neither the Republicans NOR the Democrats that got us into this mess; but rather, it is the Republicans AND the Democrats that got us into this mess. The sooner we come to that conclusion the better.
It has been said that it’s a recession when your neighbor loses his/her job/house; but it’s a depression when you lose yours. This is where we are at right now.
You talk of empty retail/office space? Just take a stroll on El Camino Real in Carlsbad from south of College Blvd as I did on Monday. You’ll see the meaning of empty office space…and this in a supposedly high-end, well-managed city.

My little comment about Republicans was just a small joke for Brian1.I agree it is not a partisan issue. I think where we are is a cultural phenomena for the most part. I don’t think we are on the road to solving it, even if all the retail in the nation rebounds. Chances for recovery are worse if it does IMO.

But why do we have the Republicans in Congress and the conservative talk-jocks feigning outrage over the bailouts when their voters (the middle class and business class voters who really matter) want the bailouts and more of them?
I believe that the Republicans are not flexible enough with their moral, small-government, no-spending dogma. Their actions don’t reflect their beliefs.
I have a Republican friend who a little dogmatic but, yet, when we talk about real estate, he would point to the $8,000 credit as a good sign that things are improving and saving the value of his house.
