Dave,
From the tone of your response, it is obvious that you are greedy and that I hit a nerve with you. In the future, realize that when a person is offended (such as yourself here),it’s because they are guilty of the crime. Don’t give it away so easily……
I was trying to make an overall point concerning the rampant materialism that is prevalent in California and how that isn’t the most important thing in life to value. We won’t have to worry about that in a few years because when pain is present in the pocketbook for most people they migrate back to what really matters in life (seems to be how it works).
I have a lot of friends that were haughty as the sky during the boom and now they are getting there ass handed to them. They are refocusing and they are more pleasant to be around these days.
It’s not that we don’t need material things it’s just to what extent and CAN WE AFFORD IT. For instance, I can go into La Jolla at the let’s Go store and pay 100.00 for a t shirt that says HUGO BOSS on the front of it…..or I can go to Target and get the same t shirt without the HUGO BOSS for 5.00. I don’t need a ROLEX to be somebody, I have a TIMEX that tells the same time…..I don’t need a brand new car every year, or a “you name it” to keep up with the Jones Family. (and in case you are wondering I could buy all these things if I wanted to, it’s not that I am envious of rich people here).
GREED breeds ignorance because it causes you to not look at the fundamentals of a decision objectively. It is rooted in an insecurity somewhere along the line.
I am sorry to hear that you are a greedy person and that you feel that greed is a good thing. I am also sorry to hear that rely upon movie quotes to justify your position of being greedy.
Also, FYI, not every invention is motivated by money, it could be passion, or frustration, that is the impetus for the product or service, or simply the creativity that is unbridled in someone to INVENT. I am a musician and I don’t write music and perform because of money, I do it because I find fulfillment in it at the end of the day.
Anyhow, hope this helps put things in perspective for you. Take a few deep breaths here Dave, it’s Friday….go buy a t shirt at Target..they are on sale 3 for 10.00.
Sincerely, Contraman

February 8, 2008 at 6:25 PM #150388daveljParticipantYeah, you hit a nerve alright… my HYPOCRISY nerve. In the form of your comments. I “rely on movie quotes to justify my position of being greedy?” What planet are you on? I wasn’t relying on that quote to justify my position – just mentioning it to provide context because it’s well known. My position stands on its own; its justification is self-evident.
“GREED breeds ignorance because it causes you to not look at the fundamentals of a decision objectively. It is rooted in an insecurity somewhere along the line.”
Uh… what? Look, now you’re just making things up. That’s a bunch of self-manufactured psychobabble that any 8 year old could see through. If you’re going to just make stuff up, at least do a better job of it.
So, you are “a musician and I don’t write music and perform because of money, I do it because I find fulfillment in it at the end of the day.” Oh, I see… so YOU find fulfillment in it… so YOU engage in writing and performing music instead of, say… working at a non-profit to help the disadvantaged, or say, taking a job where you’d make more money so that you could give it away to charity. Sounds pretty greedy to me, contraman. Sounds like your life is all about YOUR FULFILLMENT. Greed isn’t just about money and material goods, contraman… you don’t understand that?
“and in case you are wondering I could buy all these things if I wanted to, it’s not that I am envious of rich people here.” Oh. My. God. You cannot be serious. Do you know how completely pathetic you sound?
There are two types of people in this world, contraman. Those that are greedy and admit it, and those that are greedy and don’t. I’m in the former group, you’re in the latter… with all the other hypocrites.
OK, off to Target, contraman. You said 3 for $10, right?
Signed, Greedy Davelj

February 8, 2008 at 7:27 PM #150150BugsParticipantOne man’s greed is another man’s motivation.
I think the problem lies not so much with the goal of gathering and consuming as many nuts as we can stuff into our pouches, but our willingness to use whatever means necessary to get those nuts. If it means getting up early and being the first tail on the ground then we usually think that’s a trait of a virtuous squirrel. However, it we’re talking about stealing those nuts from the next tree over then that’s something only a bad squirrel would do.
Having run that analogy into the ground…
Consumption by itself isn’t inherently bad, but overconsumption beyond one’s means is the epitome of bad. The only thing that’s worse is blaming our problems on others, a trait which often accompanies the sin of overconsumption.
