It might be a cow bird, aka buffalo bird. It is too friendly to release because it might land on someone who does not like birds. It sits on your hand and likes to hang out with me when I am on the computer. I was hoping to release her, but she really became much tamer than most of the pet birds we had as kids. I guess we raised her from such a young age that she thinks we are her family. I gave her a mirror so she knows what she looks like, but that does not seem to bother her. Maybe she knows she is adopted. So, I was just looking on e-bay for a chicken tractor for her. I think maybe an old bird cage, so she could dig in the dirt when I am out doing the same thing, but she would be safe from the predators. There are a lot of ravens out here and a couple of road runners.

Is this the bird you have, Aecetia?

What a sweet story! Do you have a lot of land out in EC? Does your “cowbird” have a name?
Thanks for making me smile π

She might end up being a bronze cow bird. We have a few of those in the yard, and a lot of finches, sparrows and orioles. We live near a preserve, so there quite a few birds here in the sticks. I am going to get a picture of her to post when I get the chance. She is still morphing into whatever kind of bird and is not there yet.
No name, because I did not want to keep her, so now that could be a problem. I will ask the cats what they call her, but it is probably some form of cat snack food. They are all keep separates. Our place is the normal size tract lot about 4500. There is a lot of open space around it, so it does not feel like we are right on top of our neighbor and it is older, so there are a lot of trees.
