It made you look.. and you remembered it. I’d say it was pretty effective.
You obviously are not his target audience. If someone was looking for a home in the area, they would probably stop by and would remember the sign as well.
Why are you so bitter? $5 says you’re a renter.
April 15, 2007 at 6:25 PM #50168lendingbubblecontinuesParticipantBrilliant post, SDA. Why are you so cranky?
$5 says you’re the eventual target of appraisal fraud investigations.
April 15, 2007 at 10:43 PM #50181forsale_2007ParticipantLOL…..
Actually it’s pretty funny. Back in 2002, I had Realtors that knocked on my door asking if we would be interested in selling our home.
Now, I have Realtors knocking on my door asking if we would be interested in buying another.
The ones that go door to door definitely seem pretty desperate.
There’s too many Realtors. Half of them shouldn’t be, because they have no clue. Just like there were too many dot com workers. Half of those shouldn’t have been called “Software Engineers”.
The good news, is once the weeding out gets done, those that are real realtors that stay will do just fine.
April 15, 2007 at 11:14 PM #50184sdrealtorParticipantFunny thing about door knocking is that it can be very effective. I have a friend that has been in the business about 30 years and is very personable. Whenever he gets slow and needs a little business he goes out door knocking. If he knocked on your door you would love speaking with him, he’s a real character and would make you laugh with his nedless supply of great stories. Every time he does it, he comes back with a couple new clients just as he has done for the last 30 years.
April 16, 2007 at 12:02 AM #50186AnonymousGuestIf the real estate business slows down too much it sounds like your friend would do well selling used cars as well.
April 16, 2007 at 12:22 AM #50189sdappraiserParticipantNot cranky, just amused by people’s dopey complaints. There must be better things to bitch about besides someone’s for sale sign.
I will bet you $5 that the stupid realtor in question with his stupid ticksseeesss booked over 6 figures in gross commissions last year.. just a guess.. post the guy/gal’s name, easy enough to look up. If he/she did, that would really give you clock punchers something to moan about.
April 16, 2007 at 6:20 AM #50195CritterParticipantMy dopey complaint: SDA’s comments which add nothing but angst to the discussion. I know SDA has good info to add regarding the appraisal process… how about it, SDA? Can you keep your input onto information worth sharing instead of comments on how dopey we are?
April 16, 2007 at 6:22 AM #50196Cow_tippingParticipantLast year 6 figures … yup … even That larchmont house in sac (6500 larchmont ave, north highlands) sold for 330K in march, agreed it sold to Casey Serin but … some realtor made out like a bandit … I’d start by talking about last month or month before instead of 2006 or 2005.
And we are going from bad to worse.
Cool.

I don't doubt that it actually might be effective. It's not that I would be annoyed if one or two realtors did that. But there was a period when 5 or 6 would do that on the same weekend. It was as bad as the telemarketer that just wouldn't go away. I don't have a problem with experienced realtors that actually know what they are doing. It's all the amateur ones that don't know half of what they're talking about that really bugs me.
April 16, 2007 at 6:50 AM #50198CritterParticipantRe: gross commissions, I have had agents (who were protesting they didn’t make as much as it seemed) tell me that they had to hand over between 20 – 50% of their gross to the firms they represented – for example, Coldwell Banker, Prudential, and Willis Allen.
SD R, other agents or those in the know, and sdr, care to comment if this is so?
April 16, 2007 at 7:54 AM #50199AnonymousGuestYes, depending on the firm they are with and their experience in the industry, they may have to give up 20-50% of their commission to their brokers.
April 16, 2007 at 10:55 AM #50213speakerParticipantSDAappraiser,
it’s a stupid trick because deliberately misspelling please with “Pleeeease” is nothing short of a gimmick. cheap gimmicks (e.g. the sign spinners) are fine for selling cheap items like sandwiches and sunglasses but not 700K homes.
yes, the sign was effective in drawing my attention. that doesn’t mean much when I WAS WALKING!
if i am not his target auidence then enlighten me as to who is the target auidence? people that are easily swayed by cheap gimmicks?
has bitter renter come to replace white trash in the lexicon?
“End of line.”
April 16, 2007 at 10:59 AM #50214recordsclerkParticipantI think we all get annoyed with door to door salesmen and telemarketers. Maybe their professions are annoying, but it is their profession. As long as people continue to make money going door to door or making cold call sales, it will continue to go on.
I also think Realtors make too much for easy transactions, but as long as there are people who waste realtor’s time and resouces, a 6% commision will remain the norm.
The art of advertising is to get you to remember the stupid sign.April 16, 2007 at 1:13 PM #50219Cow_tippingParticipantSubmitted by speaker on April 16, 2007 – 12:55pm.
