The summary is that the new high frequency traders are sending in thousands of “phoney” orders per second to drive the market in which ever direction they desire. The manipulation is leaving “footprints” that are unmistakable for normal trading. Volumes, prices et. al. that are way out of line with “normal” orders. Twenty thousand orders in 5 seconds that are changing prices even though they are not executed.
