It sounds like the SoCal locations are doing well financially – especially those that have been overhauled. The ones that are closing (about 30/100) are outside of Orange and San Diego counties.
I love it as do my girls. My husband and son aren’t as interested. Not enough meat ….
October 7, 2016 at 9:09 AM #801877svelteParticipantI love the place. Used to eat at the RB location regularly. Haven’t been for awhile though. Not through lack of desire, just a change in my location and situation. Now I eat at my desk most days.
Next time I’m near one I think I’ll stop in. Would hate to see them disappear completely. It’s a great place.
October 7, 2016 at 9:14 AM #801878scaredyclassicParticipantmy kids may have bankrupted them. i encourage overeating for full value
October 7, 2016 at 4:48 PM #801884flyerParticipantWe love it also. Have been going to the CV/Del Mar location since it
opened–and our kids loved it when they were young. Even with all of the other great dining options in the area, this is still one of our favorites. We knew the original Garden Fresh owner, who also used to dine at the CV location, but since the company was sold in 2005, lots of things have changed.
As others have mentioned, it sounds like SoCal will be safe, as they try to weather this latest storm. Hope so.
October 7, 2016 at 5:12 PM #801886SK in CVParticipantMakes me sad. I went to the first one on Mission Gorge pretty regularly when it first opened, then the one in RB when I lived in Poway. It was one of kids’ favorites when we lived in CV. And I just went to a Sweet Tomatoes in Phoenix a few weeks ago. Seemed like a reasonably well run operation. What people like changes. Maybe we’re past the salad bar phase. When I mentioned it to my brother, he reminded me I lost a bit of money investing in a copy cat chain in the early 80’s.
October 7, 2016 at 11:44 PM #801896HatfieldParticipantI used to go to the one on Mission Gorge in the 80s. They’ve really gone downhill in the past few years tho. It seems like their soups are using cheaper and cheaper ingredients, and overall quality has fallen way off. I haven’t been to one in at least 6 months, so I wonder if revenues are falling off also.

October 9, 2016 at 8:32 PM #802009EssbeeParticipantIn fact, I went to the RB one last night (Saturday) and it was absolutely 100% packed to the gills. The line goes out the door and you have to wait a bit to get a table. That location is always full on Fridays, Sundays, and Wednesdays, too. I’ve never tried the other days.
Mission Gorge is also always pretty full.
I’ve also tried Clairemont, La Mesa, and West LA/Brentwood. I don’t remember them being quite as crowded, but they still seemed to be pretty popular.

October 19, 2016 at 9:59 AM #802481poorgradstudentParticipantFor now it sounds like the SD county restaurants are safe. It’s a pretty decent place to take my 4 year old; he can pick what he will actually eat from a lot of relatively healthy choices, and the price isn’t awful with a coupon. I do often end up filling up on bread and baked potatos, but some of the soups are really nice.
Protip for those complaining about the lack of meat: the bacon you can put on the loaded potatos can also go on salads, in soup, etc!

Just got a coupon in my email box for 50% off. For tonight only.
October 19, 2016 at 11:36 AM #802485NotCrankyParticipantI eat pretty well there and think I get my money’s worth. However, my kids eat more of the craptastic muffins, mac’n’cheese’ and desserts. We eat much better at home even when there is something sweet afterwards. It bothers me to take them there other than as a treat, and they really like it.
