Should you invest in your house to get out of cash?

Quick background. My wife and I bought a 1600 sq ft 3 bedroom 2 bath house in University City. We bought the house last Feb and have already seen significant gains (considering the market) in the area and I have no doubt if we needed to sell we would be on the up side. We are in a fixed 30 at 4.25%. It has a nice view of about 50 miles encompassing UTC, Miramar and the mountains beyond. The house was built in 1967 and has not been updated. I have been upgrading the house myself (master bathroom, lighting, landscaping, etc.) The kitchen will be done in March. Again, I do all the work myself and really find amazing deals on almost everything I put in the house (appliances, etc). I sit at a computer all day and can scour for deals. My wife likes to have cash in savings for comfort.

Would you recommend maybe putting more cash into the house to finish the remodel sooner as opposed to holding cash which may soon lose its value signifantly do to inflation? With the money we have I can probably finish the house. Again, I do all the work myself and find amazing deals….so I am not paying retail consumer prices on the remodel. Our kitchen will probably cost the average person $40-50K but I will be into it for around $20K.

I would still recommend holding onto some saving for the just in case. Other than that the materials now are cheap and I did the same exact thing you are talking about many months back (all the work myself). My kitchen only costed 9500 total but I didnt spend much on cabinets. Im only about 25k into the house right now and thats after redoing my small pool. I got all the pool equipt off craigslist including a free heater that works awesome (awesome guy in North Park gave it to me).
