You have a great-sounding wife and kids, your “dream house” with a pool, a compost toilet, what sounds like a pretty interesting job, and (presumably) your health.

Jobs till 56 or a normal somewhat pathetic but healthy life till a sudden heart attack on the tennis court at 80.
I worked with a famous dude in my misspent youth who died very young but wealthy. I remember being surprised shocked and sad he was dead but glad I was alive.

GuestWhen I was 18 I’d probably have chosen the Jobs life. After all, 56 was soooo far away.
Today, there is no doubt I’d go for “somewhat pathetic.” Probably already have.

GuestEven 75 is still young IMHO.
I want to live to at least 90, preferably to 120.
Some don’t get to choose, but I believe that most do get to choose. A smoker asked for lung problems. Someone who overeats or consumes junk is asking for diabetes, heart disease, etc… A drunkard is asking for liver problems. I have no sympathy.
I have a friend who complains about back pain. He won’t lose weight but is considering surgery. That is so screwed-up.

Even if the choice were between Jobs’ life and dying at 56, or my life and dying at 56, I’d still choose to live my own life. If I get to live longer than he did, that’s just icing on the cake.
