I’m kind of shocked. It’s like strangers are trying to help me out. I wonder if this is some kind of new trend…compassion? In the last week, I have had two such experiences. The insurance person at my HMO called to tell me that I have beem under the mistaken impression that my insurance company covers my vision exams. She said, “No, they don’t. You accidentally got a free exam last time you came in [2004].You are looking at paying between $160 and $250 for an office visit. I recommend you go to one of the high-profile mall shops. You’ll save a lot of money.”
Then, a couple of days ago, I went to a window coverings place (think “three”) and said I wanted to replace the remote-controlled horizontal blinds in my two living room picture windows. One blind won’t go up at all, and the other will only go up halfway, and it’s not a battery thing. I’ve tried everything. The salesperson handed me the business card of an unaffiliated company that tries to repair the problem. “If that doesn’t work,” salesperson said, “go to Home Depot or Wal-Mart for replacements.”
