Portland, Seattle, Denver. In that order. I personally would avoid Salt Lake, but that may just be me. The city is in a big bowl and has a smog problem.
Both Portland and Seattle have moderate climates, (not SoCal quality) more green, good economies with good schools around, access to wineries, skiing in the winter, art programs, Nature galore, etc etc.
I have friends in Baltimore, NYC, Texas (small towns), Vegas, Chicago, and a few other cities. Only the ones in Vegas talk about moving back.

January 29, 2009 at 11:26 AM #338137TubaParticipantI’ve heard great things about Chapel Hill NC. College town, great schools, and close to Durham International Airport. I’ve also heard that the realestate market didn’t inflate like a bubble, and is still in positive territory.

There are some really fabulous areas with modern homes to be had for very little now.
There is plenty of wildlife, low utility bills (we insulated the attic and rarely use air-conditioning). There are lots of young people. In the nice areas there is no gang activity like one finds in CA…
