Recs for home insurance? Progressive just dropped us

After 5 years we shopped around for homeowners rates and made a switch to Progressive/American Strategic Insurance Corp. After 6 weeks we got a notice they are dropping us because “The roof type does not meet our eligibility criteria.” Our main roofs are 3 years old, though we do have two small roof areas that we did not replace – but the roof types are completely standard and were disclosed …fun.

Any recommendations for brokers or carriers? We liked our old Farmers agent, but he sold and the new person is not great. Possible relevant details for the property:

— 92116 but not directly on a canyon
— Pool (plans to remove but still here for now)
— 2 adults, 2 cats, no dogs or kids
— I’m WFH for now but normally the property isn’t used for business activity
— We’ve never made a claim or missed any payments

have you checked with costco? They offer home and auto, and at least with auto, it was very competitive.

I just switched my 3 of my cars From allstate to costco’s provider and for those 3 cars, my insurance has better coverage and the premium is lower by almost $600/year

The other two (old audi and miata) would have been cheaper at costco too, but i found out those two can be insured for really cheap by Hagerty as a classic car and so its like $350 for both of them per year with the max liability, collision, comprehensive,. and special provisions for parts write off worth more than the car itself…

All online and so very easy for simple situations like yours & mine.

Been ok for 3 years now, but they keep jacking up the rate each year like every insurer so I may have to endure the hassle of shopping around again this month..
1st year.. $599
2nd year.. $731
3rd year.. $863
Next year.. $1063

Costco is a good idea I never seems to have. I’ll definitely check it out since I’ll be cancelling my Progressive for auto after this.

Thanks! A friend also said they were happy with Hippo. I worry a bit because our house is old and hers is not. After getting cancelled by Prog/ASI, I did some more research and saw Reddit posts from industry people saying ASI is good if you’ve got a spotless new build but that they are will decline to underwrite ever for cosmetic issues. I think they actually sent someone out — noticed a lurker a month or so ago– who looked at the front of our house and said “Nah.”

So now I wonder how many other places are that choosy. It’s not like a tornado is going to come thru and they’ll be on the hook to replace my beat up redwood exterior but who knows.

Miata’s aren’t that expensive to have.
NB’s go for around $5-7k and pretty cheap to insure and pretty cheap to fix.

It’s true. But I need an automatic (I know, I know) and those are harder to come by. Learning to drive stick should have been my pandemic project!

automatic miatas are much easier to find than manual, because most people prefer manual. So if you want an automatic, far less competition and probably far less abused since they probably dont end up at autocrosses and track days.

Also John Hine Mazda is closing down for good in September 6. (owner sold to Carvana and carvana doesnt want to keep the mazda franchise). im told their remaining ND RF miatas are all automatics. (my colleague wanted to get a manual). You might be able to get a deal on one.

We’re not much of a price shopper for insurance, if we find a good company we stay with them. Which is why we were with AAA for auto insurance forever.

That is, until our car purchase last year. It was an expensive car, granted, but they insured us immediately then put the car on a “pending” list. I called and asked what that was and they said it hadn’t received final approval but I was covered in the interim. It was like that for a month before I lost my patience and started calling around.

Turns out that, by transferring auto insurance over to who held our home insurance (Liberty Mutual), I could get the house, cars, earthquake, AND umbrella insurance and still pocket $800/year over what I was paying before. AAA was putting the screws to us! Or maybe I’m talking too soon and LM will jack up the rates when we renew in a couple of months. We’ll see. I will say this: the LM agent was a pleasure to work with. We’ll see if that is true if we ever have to file a claim. 🙂

I just read that Carvana is building a Carvana car vending machine at the corner of I-15 and 78 in Escondido. We had been seeing the structure going up and couldn’t figure out what it was.

So I read up on the car vending machine thing. What a gimmick! But I guess if it makes car buying fun, who am I to judge? I just hope they don’t regret building that thing next to RR tracks, with brake dust and all.
