ParticipantI would also appreciate some advice about smart phones from this tech savvy group. I’m looking for a smart phone that I could take surfing/kayaking with me without fear of being ruined if it goes overboard. So essentially waterproof and a floater would be nice. Anybody know if it exists.

Participantjimmyle, it depends on which OS you want. My wife loves her Trophy. Not the highest spec’ed phone out there, but it’s buttery smooth compare to other much higher spec’ed phones (including iPhone). If you don’t want WP7 phone, then go with the Galaxy Nexus (the latest and greatest from Android). There’s always the iPhone 4S if you want to stay w/ iOS.
threadkiller, you can check out the Motorola Defy: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2372480,00.asp

ParticipantGalaxy Nexus… a friend just got it and it’s amazing! I got an iPhone 4S because the Nexus was not out when I got it otherwise I would’ve gone for the Nexus no doubt. The Nexus is so light it makes the iPhone 4 feel like a brick! It’s also full 4G on Verizon unlike the iPhone and Ice Cream Sandwich is sweet!
BTW, CNet rated the Nexus “Outstanding”, it’s the only phone with that rating right now.

ParticipantGet the Galaxy Nexus. I love it. Better than the Nexus S and Nexus One that I had.
Ice Cream Sandwich OS rocks…Though it’s still buggy here and there… I know I know… I’m trying to help fix that.

With 4G on, I get through about 1 day with normal usage (my normal is a lot more intensive than most). You have an option to turn 4G off, then it’ll function just like any other 3G phone. You can turn on 4G to do tethering.December 20, 2011 at 12:28 PM #734854SmellsFeeshy
ParticipantI am going to be making a similar switch soon as well. My contract was up at the end of November and I’ve been waiting to find a deal on the Galaxy Nexus. Right now they are offering it for $189 on Amazon Wireless (was $150 a couple days ago) but I’m planning on waiting until after xmas in hopes they have a .01 holiday sale on it.
I’ve done a lot of research on the GN and a few people are complaining about the reception being poor when compared to other LTE phones. Also there are a few issues with apps not being compatible with Android 4.0 yet.
Overall though it still seems to be the best phone available for now on Verizon. The Droid RAZR and HTC Rezound may be worth consideration also, although neither has Android 4.0/Ice Cream Sandwich yet.

Maybe a good thing to do to use your laptop or iPad at work if your employer monitors your computer activity.
Sprint still has unlimited data plan.

I compared all three phones and found the display on Rezound is amazing for text and videos seemed sharper than Nexus. The Rezound has Qualcomm LTE Chipset, which may be why LTE performance is better than Samsung/VIA LTE on Nexus. On speed tests I was getting 10-12Mb/sec on Nexus and 15-17Mb/sec on Rezound. Not really big deal except for potential battery issue with 3G/4G handoff. The camera on the Nexus is subpar compared to others, especially the I4S.As for phone call quality the MOTO RAZR probably most solid choice if MOTO used same high quality as in the Droid 1.

ParticipantCan I keep my current account with ATT while dropping the iPhone for the Nexus? Unless, they come out with an iPhone 5 within two months.

Participantthreadkiller,
only source i’m aware of making waterproof mobile phone is Sonim. See sonimtech.comI’m a mech engr whose specialty is mobile phone design
Please note that even with the boutique supplier Sonim, only a few of their products are waterproof to a level that surfing would require, plus none are spec’d for salt water exposure

ParticipantHi guys. I just got the Rezound and it’s a fantastic phone. I am still pining for a Nexus though because of the pure Android experience and ICS is AMAZING, but there were too many issues with the Nexus that I couldn’t overlook.
I would go with the Nexus, the Rezound, and then the Razr. Razr has an awful screen and no replaceable battery.
