What do you guys think about single family homes which are being built with garage in the rear (with alley) ? Do you like them?
We saw some new homes in carmel valley “hampton lanes”. The builder might have easily used the alley area and added up to each home to have a garage in the front and yard in the back but instead went with this model.
The issues I have with these homes is that
1) They look very incomplete from front especially if the elevation is Spanish. They give them the feel of townhomes.
2) Garage in rear means no back yard. These homes have only side yard which is always smaller than back yard. But it gives lot more privacy though as the neighboring home only have few small top level windows that they can’t see you.
3) That also gives you no windows on one side of your home in the first floor.
I guess it comes down to whether you are turned off by basing the curb appeal on the car storage or whether you prefer the look of the garage defining your curb appeal.
I’ve lived with both.. aesthetically I prefer the garage in back, and the house being what you see… but I also like driving straight into the garage and entering the kitchen from the garage. That’s a big plus of an attached garage.
But at least in my neighborhood, most people park their cars in the driveway or street and fill their garages with junk.
