ParticipantHi Oshens. Thanks for the digging me out of the depths of Piggington’s database, and offering to help with questions on Hawaii. I had assumed that Hawaii is expensive. We don’t want to buy a home there, but rather are thinking of spending a couple of years there so we can enjoy more of the ocean outdoor life we crave, until house prices correct in California. I don’t need to look for a job, or be near schools. We have been to Hawaii and it seems to me the best place to be based to start with is Oahu. We’d like to be fairly near Honululu and on or near the coast. Hawaii Kai was recommended to me, and I have seen one or two favorably priced rentals. I guess my questions are what other comparable places would you recommend? If we can’t find anywhere around Hawai Kai, is the North Shore very isolated, and what about the other islands, in respect of amenities and entertainment? Can you recommend a shipping company? I have lots of questions but this probably isn’t the best place to ask them.
Just to keep things on topic, what is happening in the housing market in Hawaii?

ParticipantThanks for the link, but I was immediately struck by these three heading:
Hawaii foreclosures up 11/30/2007
Foreclosure rates level off 11/29/2007
Isle foreclosures continue to rise 11/29/2007
Seems to be a little confusion there:) Also, higher median house price and lower incomes that CA …and yet “home values still rising”? I’m skeptical …sorry.

Participantno need to be sorry, I didn’t write them. Don’t be thrown
by the headings though, all articles say foreclosures have risen substantially, although the number of filings in Oct (I believe) have levelled off from the previous month. There is, as I said, a good overview of information there,it covers all the islands and if you notice is from a variety of sources. -

ParticipantWell, houses are taking longer to sell but the values are supposedly holding. Hawaii is a great place to live, albeit expensive. North shore is really laid back and can get really crowded at certain times of the year due to surfing events and stuff. It’s definitely a lifestyle there. It depends on what you are looking for. Hawaii Kai is associated with the wealthier folks. North shore = no shirts, no shoes type of place but lots of fun little boutiques and shave ice (snow cones). Maui is REALLY overpriced and getting pretty developed. I myself couldn’t live on the outer islands as it is too boring for me. However if you could live a slow paced life in a really beautiful place, the outer islands are good. Each island has it’s pros and cons. I can go into that if you like…

ParticipantA relative of mine just bought a very nice newer home in Hawaii Kai and loves it. He paid about $1.2M for a 3000 sq ft tract home in a family friendly community. He’s lived in HI for about 15 years and knows the area well. He’s a very highly paid professional with very stable employment that is absolutely recession-proof.
I dont know what you are looking for but that seems to be a nice area similar to NOrth County Coastal SD. Another big factor was that it is a relatively easy commute into Honolulu as most of the population lives on the other side of Honolulu.
