Just to clarify the “Academia” post. Family members I mentioned are in Academic Administration at the University level, which is the reason for the $200K+.
All admit they chose it because they enjoy it, and it provides a great income pretty much guaranteed for life (when you factor in their cool retirement package which they plan to take in their 50’s) + they all wanted to work and live in CA and found some great opportunities here.
Lol, and people wonder why college tuition and student loans are going to the moon.
LOL, Yea that is the advice I would give my kid, If your not going to be a Doctor of something, Move to L.A. and get a Job at LADWP LOL.
But seriously My nephew is going for his PhD so he can teach at the college level.
July 28, 2015 at 9:20 AM #788355ltsdddParticipantFor an administrator, $200K/year is an anomoly, unless you’re a president, chancellor or a dean of of law/medicine/dentistry. Many deans of “lesser” disciplines don’t even crack the 6 figure salary.
July 28, 2015 at 9:37 AM #788356AnonymousGuestfor the vast majority of PhDs, the only career path available is to work in Academia. Very incestuous industry.

That is absolutely correct. I was amazed also. They have been very fortunate, but there are income anomalies in every profession. In my profession, pilots can make anywhere from $35K (those starting out today with regional carriers) to $400K+ (for those high on the seniority lists with major carriers.)
July 28, 2015 at 4:49 PM #788366The-ShovelerParticipantIf they work for one of the bigger colleges in the L.A. area (UCLA, USC etc…) that is probably a quite normal pay scale for professors and senior admin staff etc….

Not according to the info here for UCLA:
http://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/compensation/2014-academic-salary-scales.htmlNot only is it not normal, it may be impossible for an administrator to make anywhere near $200K/yr – unless, again, they’re in higher positions (Deans and up). As for professors, the only ones that make the $200K/yr are in health sciences – which I am sure most if not all are M.Ds.
July 29, 2015 at 5:54 AM #788369flyerParticipantAgree most making $200K+ are in higher positions, as are the family members I mentioned, who happen to be at various CA universities.
