What a hot button topic,
My 2c:
Prop 13 is good, not perfect, but does what it is supposed to. Has probably inflated CA RE by 20% over other states though.
I would avoid Mello Roos too, but I would look at the deal as a whole, and the value received for the Mello Roos $.
There is an inverse relationship between CA school quality and illegal immigration. More tax $$ won’t fix this.
CA spends over $10k per student. Think about what you get for your +$300k of property tax per class of kids. Mostly overpaid teachers who can’t get fired, etc.
ok, it’s my 4c.

February 18, 2008 at 7:03 PM #155172jpinpbParticipantI’m sorry. I really have to say of all the professions, I would not say teachers are overpaid. They have to go to school for years to get teaching degrees, pay for their student loans for years and then get a job teaching overcrowded classes w/cuts around every corner.
Not to really get on a hot topic button and no offense to SD Realtor – my dad was a real estate broker – but there are a lot of realtors who are not the best representation of their profession making 6 digits for not doing much, especially the past few years, so I dare say, they would be the ones overpaid.
Now, please, all you realtors, take it easy and don’t beat me up too much.

That must be a CA constitutional thing. I am not aware of any other jurisdiction that has determined that to be the case. Don’t get me wrong, I am a proponent of lower taxes however achieved.
Given that reality, however, this still does little to explain the hard sell on funds lacking for “adequate” teacher pay. As far as I remember, teachers work about 25% less than every other full time, non-civil employee. Even harder to understand is the demise of the educational system here given the reduction in the % of taxes paid by homeowners. While the % dropped, the absolute numbers have gone through the roof (I’m speculating). I don’t get it. (actually I do but that would mean I go into gov bashing mode)
JP,
I have 4 kids. The fact that we send them to a private school makes this discussion even more sensitive to the touch. I checked the scores of the high schools before the move and determined that the top high schools (TP, La Jolla, Coronado, Poway) were ones where mello roos appears to have had little or no effect on the quality of the education. While there are other, newer high schools (westview) that have seen MR benefit, most of those bonds appear to be funding new elementary schools.
