May 16, 2013 at 11:13 AM #762071hawkParticipantMy brother is a plumber. He might be able to do it on the side or I can give you his company’s information. PM for details.

I am stuck back at Chrysler since the Obama bailout and the demand for the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango have caused me to postpone my plans to open “Laguna Beach Mechanical” anytime soon. Detroit has “boomed” (original boom or bust town since 1935) since I returned right after the bankruptcy. We are working at full capacity plus Sunday scheduled production instead of maintenance. Quite interesting going on calls on the floor to fix stuff that should have been addressed during downtime no longer provided we tradesman. As far as a plumber goes, finding one should be from word of mouth. Don’t insult anyone and ask for bids on a 300 dollar job. Figure it like Frank Bleu the creator of flat rate pricing: If a lawyer contributes nothing to society (except future politicians) and charges 300 dollars per hour, and an accountant, who contributes nothing to society and charges 175 dollars per hour, why then does the plumber who is fully licensed and charged with protecting the safety of your now scarce drinking water and sanitary plumbing as well as installing a natural gas appliance (potential bomb) 4 feet from where your child sleeps on the other side of the wall be expected to charge 50 dollars per hour? Find a reputable union plumber if you can find one, their workers do /should have teeth. Call Plumbers local union 230 San Diego and ask for a referal. You will then have the full backing of an organization ( union) if he screws up and they will/should see he/she makes it right. And the few extra dollars you pay, well under that of a lawyer, will equate to value. Or you can join the housewife xxxx list for a fee and she can spin somebody’s company and collect her fee for what I just gave you for free.Motown(p.s- Daughter just got her 2 year evaluation with the owner of large immigration law firm (my daughter works for a lawyer?-she refused the 230 apprenticeship ) and has been recommended for a promotion to full paralegal. God bless San Diego, God Bless the wonderful posters on this board and may God bless the golden state of California and it’s people.
June 15, 2013 at 6:30 AM #762813spdrunParticipantThanks — I ended up just looking on Yelp and hiring the first person that got good reviews, and who answered the phone directly and gave an estimate, rather than having me go through some frou-frou secretary who didn’t know jack about plumbing. I didn’t ask about union(*) or not, legal or not, just that he could do the job and do it well. Which he did, and came in about $20 under estimate in the end!
As far as your job, just because your GM plant is doing well right now, why not save a bit, walk the hell out, and start your own shop anyway? Working for yourself has got to be more pleasant than working for a mega-corepiration like Chrysler (or Generic Morons, AT&T, Monsanto, or GE). With one, you have more control, with the other, you’re just a cog in the machine.
(*) – non-union one-man show would actually be preferable to me. I’m a lone wolf and have more respect for other lone-wolves than employees or unionized groupers.
