ParticipantTwo resources I recommend for scouting out the “good” neighborhoods and the “not as good” are:
1) ARJIS crime mapping, http://mapping.arjis.org/default.aspxThis lets you look at neighborhoods and ZIP codes, radius of a certain address, and more.
2) San Diego Police Department’s Crime Statistics and Maps; I’d definitely recommend “crime rates per 1,000 population”: http://www.sandiego.gov/police/stats/index.shtml
As a reference, based on FBI stats, national averages for crimes (per 100,000, not 1,000) are roughly 5 murders, 31 rapes, 450 overall violent crimes, 3,400 overall property crime (burglary, larceny, car theft and so forth). To compare the SD figures to these, just divide the SD figures by 100.

ParticipantPark@54 is right in the middle of City heights, across the street from Colina Del Sol park and Crawford Hight school. Between El Cajon Blvd and University Ave. This area is blighted, to say the least. Gangs run rampant and sirens/helicopters are a nightly occurance. A melting pot of Somalians, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Central and South Americans, etc. Any agent who described this a the “college area” is blowing smoke up your you-know-what. Run in the opposite direction and never look back. You owe it to your children to do your homework and find a more suitable area to raise them. I graduated from USC and lived off campus in the college area of south central L.A. And survived. Nuff said. Porkman

ParticipantThanks for the replies. I understand it’s a bad area. In the liveable areas of SD it’s still at 200+ sf right now, and that’s too much for me. I’ll keep my eye on San Diego in the next year.
