CA doesn’t have hoods? Not to mention a strong meth culture? News to me. As far as being polite: if someone is causing the stress, it’s not rude to tell them.
Yes, spdrun, CA DOES have ‘hoods … not really in SD, though. As far as a “strong meth culture,” most of that in SD County was run out on a rail by Supervisor Jacob et al by about ’99. That “meth culture” has now been able to “entrench themselves” in the rural areas of the “flyover states.”
Sad, because these areas have never had the law enforcement numbers to combat it properly, hence the DEA/NTF moving around and strategically setting up nondescript “trailers” all over the place in there.
Signed,
Frequent motorist in certain “flyover states.”

BG, you should fly.
I’m planning to fly to Bloomington, IN later this year to visit a cousin who lives in one of those rare liveable enclaves in those flyover states.
Having said that, I do like Utah. The people there are very polite and friendly.
July 18, 2012 at 4:24 PM #748341sdrealtorParticipantWhere in San Diego would you equate with West Philly, North Philly, Camden, South Bronx, Newark, Spanish Harlem etc? Even the worst parts of San Diego are relatively safe in comparison with these places that have hoods I wouldnt drive through during daylight hours.
July 18, 2012 at 4:33 PM #748343spdrunParticipantLogan Heights/Shelltown. And what about LA: Watts, Compton, South Central.
This being said, I’ve driven (and walked) through South Bronx, Newark, and Spanish Harlem in the day. No real issues, probably would avoid hanging there at 3 am alone. I live about a mile from Spanish Harlem and had a good friend who lived on E 105th St whom I’d visit regularly. Used to live in West Philly, and took Baltimore Ave. out to the ‘burbs on a regular basis.
Camden is a whole ‘notha ball game, but it’s comparatively small.
July 18, 2012 at 4:39 PM #748345sdrealtorParticipantLogan Heights and Shelltown are a walk in the park comparatively. Im sure the parts you walked through in Harlem, SOuth Bronx, Newark, West Philly etc where of the better variety because you know the area. Throw an out of towner driving around lost at dusk in one of those places and they could get eaten alive if they pull over and ask for directions. In Logan Heights they would get directions.
And Camden aint so small. Its far bigger than anything in San Diego.
July 18, 2012 at 4:44 PM #748346spdrunParticipantActually, probably not. I ended up with a dead motorcycle battery and broken clutch cable in Newark one day (don’t ask, but it made push starting basically impossible). Saw some dudes working on a car in their garage, asked if they had a charger. They let me chill there for an hour while I charged the battery, and let me borrow their tools to remove the fairings.
I can’t speak to Logan Heights, but I’ve heard of out-of-towners getting shot because they went down the wrong street in L.A.
July 18, 2012 at 4:57 PM #748352briansd1GuestI can empathize with spdrun in that I believe in living in the city and taking a chance on a neighborhood on its way up. You have the fun of being near downtown and the all activities that are there. To me, living the suburbs would be a bad nightmare.
But I understand people who want everything antiseptic, because I want to own home to be antiseptic. I can deal with the grunge outside my house, but I don’t want to live it in.
In older cities, you live the grunge day in and day out and that wears you down very quickly. In Philly, not everyone has good AC. It’s 100F with high humidity over there. I’ve been to old mansions turned to apartments; but and it’s so musty in there, I don’t understand how people can breath the air. Those places smell like some grandmother died there. One of my friends lived in one of those old mansions in Chelsea, Manhattan (it’s worth many $ millions).
San Diego is a special case because of the nice weather. But generally, all over the nation, people want newer, comfortable housing because they don’t have the time or inclination to DIY.
July 18, 2012 at 5:11 PM #748354spdrunParticipantDepends on the building, I guess. Mine was built in 1911 or so, and my apartment doesn’t smell of much of anything. Plaster over brick construction. Big windows, decent ventilation, enough electrical capacity to run appropriately-sized A/C’s in summer. Wish it were bigger, but that’s about it.
July 18, 2012 at 7:53 PM #748369sdrealtorParticipantAgain we are talking SD not LA. LA is a whole notha ballgame.
Then why bring up Logan Heights if you cant speak to it? You are starting to sound like a complete bullshitter which is typical for NYers. I knew I had you pegged.
E 105th St isnt all that bad. One of my oldest friends lives on 117th and Morningside and thats not even bad yet.
Newark is a big place. There are parts that are fine and parts that most defintely arent. I cant think of a single place in SD County that while run down is not safe to walk the streets.
Camden is a very scary place. When I was in high school we used to go into some of the worst parts to play hoops. My best friend was the shooting guard on my HS team and good friends with Milt Wagner and Billy Thompson (we played in the same conference as Camden and Woodrow Wilson) back in the day. We got a pass most people wouldnt get walking around there with white faces. There is nothing even close to it in SD
July 18, 2012 at 8:47 PM #748373spdrunParticipantI thought this had turned into a CA vs East Coast pyxxing contest. Or at least SoCal 🙂
West Harlem (esp below Columbia Uni) and East Harlem are two different ball games. We can at least agree about Camden sucking!

Yes, but likely in Spanish…
July 18, 2012 at 9:57 PM #748378bearishgurlParticipantI actually exited to buy gas once (cuz I needed it right then and there) at none other than a “Burbank” exit (which was much less than what I would consider a “stellar” area to exit in with a kid and dog in tow). I would have felt a bit more comfortable exiting the 5 in Downey or Hawaiian Gardens, just cuz I am more familiar with South LA Co. Or even Figueroa on the west side.
July 18, 2012 at 10:11 PM #748379bearishgurlParticipantA lot of central LA County and inland Orange County seems like an “armpit” to me. And personal safety is spurious in most of these parts and also based upon luck, IMHO.
Give me Encanto (sd) at the 3-way at 69th and Lisbon any day of the week!

I can hardly wait.
“Hey, Doc! I’m thinking about getting sick eight months from today. Should I make an appointment now?”
