They are doing great this year and I am glad to hear that you are not hanging out in some sleazy bar, but going to basketball games instead. I will look for you in the crowds when I watch them on the 11:00 news. It does not seem like you were able to get the message across to the Piggs. I think they are football fans.
January 23, 2012 at 11:01 AM #736616sdduuuudeParticipantYep. I’m a college hoops fan from way back. I have always felt that college basketball is the best live sporting environment in the US. Nothing compares to the energy. At a college hoops game, the student fan section is the key to the environment and the SDSU student fans are great. I have only been to 1 game this year and it was great fun.
Still hoping Beckham buys San Diego a Major League Soccer team, though. Until that happens, SDSU hoops is the best game in town.

It was almost a little scary.
College basketball is pretty intense
January 23, 2012 at 4:56 PM #736626sdrealtorParticipantThe kids at SDSU love any reason to party (not that most college kids dont). The tough thing about SDSU basketball is the lack of real rivalries and other quality programs close by. Back east you have rivalries tha thave been going on for years among cross town and cross state programs in the Big East, ACC and a few other smaller leagues. we just dont get that here. As to why the crowds are more sedate back east? Students make up a much smaller portion of the crowd as the programs have HUGE Alumni season ticket holder bases that SDSU does not. Its great to see what SDSU has done and I hope they keep it up. Gotta get my son down there for a game soon.
January 24, 2012 at 12:06 AM #736643AecetiaParticipantGo Aztecs!
January 24, 2012 at 8:08 AM #736647ctr70ParticipantTemeculaguy is right on. Aztecs hoop is THE BEST entertainment in town hands down. The games are exciting and the atmosphere is absolutely electric! The team is a huge surprise this year now being #13, it was supposed to be a re-building year. It is THE BEST venue to watch college hoops on the west coast right now period…surpassing UCLA, USC, CAL, Stanford, and Washington.
Next year they have the whole backcourt back and they are bringing 4 new high profile transfers and recruits. They will be off the hook next year.
I would not say east coast hoops is sedate by any stretch of the imagination. Have you ever seen the student section at a Duke home game???? The sun still rises and sets east of the Rockies for college hoops…but I love the Aztecs.

From what I’ve heard, The Pit is every bit as crazy as the east-coast fans if not the absolute loudest in the country.
I went to a final 4 several years ago between AZ, Duke, MD, and MI St. The Maryland fans did themselves proud. And, after losing to Duke in the first game, they were just as boisterous cheering against Duke in the Duke / Arizona.
January 24, 2012 at 11:33 AM #736660ctr70ParticipantI’ll probably watch the Aztecs vs. Wyoming road game tonight at a local sports bar if any PIGGS want to join.
January 24, 2012 at 9:09 PM #736727temeculaguyParticipantDarn ctr, I saw this post too late, I was in SD earlier and as it turns out, I don’t get the MTN up here so I had to listen on the radio.
Now they are ranked #12, with another victory tonight, they beat UNM in the pit already so the one game looming is at UNLV. They will be in top 10 by then but UNLV is good. Our fans travel in droves to vegas thus neutralizing their home court advantage, it’s often called Viejas East and we’ve beat them 9 out 10, but this is the best UNLV team in decades.
Glad to see some piggington support on this. And for those of you thinking you just need to get around to going, they are sold out with some nosebleeds and single seats at best to be found, you have to buy them before the season starts or pay the aftermarket premium. It’s 20% students, behind the basket, the rest is alumni, I feel like I’m at a reunion when I go and I graduated over 20 years ago. Don’t be intimidated, it is exactly like sdrealtor remembers the east coast, with the exception of the weather.
January 24, 2012 at 9:34 PM #736730sdrealtorParticipantSounds like I gotta get to a game. Time to call Timmy. He can get tix to anything
January 25, 2012 at 9:09 AM #736751temeculaguyParticipantI realize hip hop isn’t really the favored music of this demographic, but this is actually pretty good, even the ESPN writers feel it’s the best out there.
http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/44874/sdsus-aztec-motto-shockingly-good
While it took me four or five listens to decode all of the words (acute middle aged white guy listening to hip hop syndrome) the lyrics are very witty and well thought out if you follow the game, the team and the players. Lots of basketball lingo, nicknames and references to thing specific about this team. I’m here to help you get over your syndrome if you also have one.
January 27, 2020 at 11:39 PM #814499temeculaguyParticipantThread Bump-Aztecs just broke the school record, recording a 21-0 record, last undefeated team in D-1 the country. Predicted to be a #1 seed in March from ESPN and CBS sports.
This is SD chance to win something in a revenue sport for the first time in the most tortured sports city in history.
Go see them, best entertainment in SD.
Now I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Kobe’s death. I bought my daughter tickets to this Fridays Laker game for a Christmas present. She is a Lakers fan because I raised her. She went to all the Kawhi Leopnard games with me at SDSU so it is in her blood. I sprung for near front row lakers seats when the Portland game on Superbowl weekend was a bargain at $450 a seat four months ago. Now it is the first game since Kobe’s death and ticket prices gives her a resale value of 5k a seat. She called today to apologize and get permission to sell them, to add to her down payment on a house fund. Not only did I consent, I almost cried, so proud of my little girl, more so than when she graduated college at the top of her class. Watch it on TV and take the 10k was what she said and who says young people today are stupid, I beg to differ. So proud! The next generation will have Piggingtons.
January 28, 2020 at 12:34 PM #814505gzzParticipantTG, congrats on the ticket flip!
Beware of scams though.
January 30, 2020 at 12:18 AM #814531temeculaguyParticipantthanks but no scam worries, bought them from lakers official site, ticketmaster and she is selling through same. We figured anyone dropping that king of coin would only deal direct through the official site.
SDSU won again tonight vs New Mexico at the pit, who had a 5 game home streak going. They didn’t just win, they destroyed them, led 17-0 at the start had them doubled at the half and were up by 30 before pulling the starters. Gary Parish of CBS sports thinks they can win out and win the NCAA title. Here’s the rub, I will be in Italy and Spain during the final four. Shame on me for not factoring in SDSU’s best season when I made travel plans six months ago. I am going to be half a world away when my once in a lifetime event occurs and I won’t be there to witness it. But I’ll take it, I’ll just stay up all night and watch on my phone!
