I put it in the fluff category.
They tend to make broad, sweeping generalizations and state them as if they were fact, rather than opinion.I’m not a fan, overall.

I put them in the “yesterday’s newspaper” category.
Have you tried Morningstar? http://morningstar.com/
August 21, 2012 at 3:01 PM #750625ucodegenParticipantI don’t know about their ‘fluff’ on 3-D printing, but I know that where I work, we use it a lot for prototyping. I don’t think that it is very effective for bulk manufacturing… too slow. You build up layers by 1/20th to 1/100th of an inch.. even smaller in some cases.
In terms of Motley Fool themselves.. I tend to find the quality of their ratings to be ‘all over the place’.. and things tend to be more hyped these days, than factual. Don’t ignore them completely. Too many people follow them.. so consider them the leaders of a ‘herd’.. not necessarily that the direction of the herd is correct.
Also.. don’t forget that ‘moat’ is important. For 3D printing.. the following might put things in more perspective: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RepRap_Project A DIY 3D plastic printer…

I look at 3D printing as a potential for a home run but it certainly doesn’t mean it will work out that way. SSYS might be the better play, but it’s hard to say. If you think commercial prototyping is where it’s at then try SSYS. If you think the consumer market is where it’s at try DDD. If you think both are just a bunch of hype kick back and watch it pull off a FSLR, CROX, or NFLX. They aren’t going to look good on paper from a valuation perspective, but early tech growth stocks never do. Is it a QCOM or something we’ll never remember in 2 years.

Well, I wasn’t considering 3-d printing as an investment direction. It was just one of the examples that M.F. was pitching as to where to invest. I was more curious what folks felt about their track record (besides calling AO-Hell)….
Generally, I’m pretty skeptical about investment “advice” from the media. I am biased and think by the time they write about something (even if they are correct), everyone else already knows it..So they are really writing old news. The only thing I think one can do is do one’s on due dilgence….But I was curious if anyone actually followed M.F. and could comment on how their track record of calls (obviously before they happened)..
I mean, to me.I kinda lump M.F. in the same category as Jim Cramer…Entertaining..Maybe lucky a few times. But overall, just entertaining. But I was really hoping someone else would prove me wrong. I feel like an pessimistic old fart…..
FWIW: one of M.F.’s infomercials was talking about dassault systemes, which I kinda chuckled about.
August 21, 2012 at 3:28 PM #750628CoronitaParticipantBTW: purely from personal interest perspective….
For those in the know…just how doable is 3-D printing possible at a garage/personal level these days. I mean, I’m really not thinking about investing. I just think it would be kinda cool to have your own 3D printer as a hobby. I recall my alta-mater had a project that created one for hobbiest….

Not really, but I guess I could go visit there just to see. What are your thoughts about morningstar?
August 21, 2012 at 3:34 PM #750630CoronitaParticipantActually, more curious… Where you folks go for your financial news (besides piggington)?

zerohedge is a favoriteAugust 21, 2012 at 3:50 PM #750632poorgradstudentParticipantMotley Fool isn’t bad for getting ideas for small cap stocks to do your own Due Diligence and research on. Their track record is mixed; they didn’t exactly see the mortgage crisis coming, and they recommend a lot of dogs. I don’t think I’d pay for their service, but their free articles are worth the time it takes to read them.

Did you check the link I had on my last message?.. it is a DIY 3D printer.. and is quite doable. It does work with plastic, primarily PET type plastics. Other people have built 3D ‘carving’ machines etc.
August 21, 2012 at 10:05 PM #750636joecParticipantEarly on back in the 90s, I thought Motley Fool was good for some of their analysis on investing. I don’t read anything about them anymore and see a lot of noise from them now.
Having worked in the financial investing biz, I’d say investing and “picking” stocks is very time comsuming to do well and most people are scammers or don’t have a clue what they are talking about. Cramer is investing porn and he’s a total idiot.

Have a listen to some of his radio shows here and let me know what you think…

Here’s 3-d systems consumer product. It’s fairly expensive and only does about 5″ by 5″ but bleeding edge technology usually comes down in price rather quickly.
