Just curious. What do you folks use to safeguard your data on your personal computer’s harddrive in case one crashes or dies?
I’ve been using incremental backup software to burn stuff onto dvd’s. But with 10/12megapixel pictures, I’m eating through about close to 500gb worth of data and growing, and incremental backup on DVD’s (at least with the software I’m using) is getting unwieldy and slow.
I was thinking of putting a external disk drive with RAID 1 for redundancy, in case one hard drive crashes. But obviously hardware redundancy doesn’t work if the data itself gets corrupt with a worm/virus/etc. Then, there are online backup services for a subscription fee bases, but I don’t feel comfortable sharing my data with a hosted solution that I need to download to.
The other option, I was thinking of going back to old school, and just use a tape backup drive (DAT)….
What are some of you folks doing you folks recommend for your personal pc?
I have two 500 GB external USB drives and I back up – by hand – monthly. I’ve had enough recovery problems with incremental backup software – and especially with tape – that I don’t trust it anymore. You think everything is going fine until the first time you need to recover something.
Backup s/w is probably much better now but my habits are set in stone at this point.
