    I’m hoping the folks who live in the LA metropolitan area can give me some advice.

    We are planning to drive from SD to the bay area on Thursday, July 2nd. We plan to leave SD at 7pm, so we’ll be driving thru OC around 8:30pm & thru downtown LA around 9pm.

    I know that traffic in LA is very bad, so, how bad is it at 8:30pm in OC & 9pm in LA ? (We plan to use highway 5).

    I have also heard that, most of the time, the 405 is much worse (in term of traffic) than the 5, is this true ?

    I hate the 5 worse than the 405, especially if you can take advantage of carpool. 5 does not have carpool in LA. 2 weeks ago, I went north through LA and I was in traffic at around 9-9:30PM in LA. So, I would personally think you should prepare for traffic. It was only bad in the one portion of the 405 that the carpool ends until the 101 split. Only way to truly miss traffic in LA would be leaving here @9PM and get to LA around 11PM (I think).

    It was a Friday night. I’d assume July 2nd would worse than your typical Friday since most people will get July 3rd off too. It was stop and go traffic.
