Parents have about 4 or 5 of of them… San Diego has near perfect weather to grow them…Especially in Pensquito…

I made the mistake of biting into one too early, and it was one of the most sour things I have ever eaten. There damn good though if you’re patient enough.

How do you eat them? With the peel, or without? The peel can be pretty bitter, but the kids have been eating directly from the tree with the peel. I prefer peeling them first which makes them taste very sweet…even better than apricots (which I love)!
Any interesting ideas or recipies using loquats? Tips and tricks for preparing and eating them? I’ve heard you can make a loquat marmalade, but that’s a bit too over my head.

peel them. Don’t eat the peel. Nasty… Don’t eat the seed (obviously). If you get tired of peeling, you probably can make juice out of them if you wash and crush them…They also make decent fruit for making jams/jelly if you’re into that.

If you can find a good home made vanilla icecream recipe then you can chop of the loquat and throw it in and have delicious loquat icecream… I have been planning to do the same with Jackfruit for sometime.

Not sure…I think the reason why my relatives have more than one tree is that it was hit and miss. Some trees never beared fruit. Some beared fruit and it was horribly sour etc….

I thought about making homemade vanilla/loquat ice cream, but my tree is still pretty young and only gave us about a dozen (half of which my girlfriend ate right off the tree while gardening) I also thought about making jam with them (which is very easy btw). Walmart has a section for canning and has all the pectin and supplies you need. We make jam each year to send out as christmas gifts.

Love the simplicity of the jelly recipe, and the vanilla ice cream sounds awesome. Will report back on how both of these worked.
One thing about loquats…the racoons love them. I’ve seen a few HUGE racoons in our tree at night.
