Who would have ever thought the day would come when San Diego had more sushi places than taco shops?

Here it is. Another first hand account of a wonderful sushi experience at Sushi Ota. 6 Japanese chefs, 1 Japanese woman chef and Ota-San himself were behind the bar. All working with finesse, talent and artistry.
The fish is so fresh. The service so good. The perfect place if you dig authentic sushi. Packed house starting the moment the doors opened.
Go ahead, get sake and get your sushi groove on. Don’t get disappointed. MAKE A RESERVATION… and don’t be surprised if they ask if you can clear out in 1-1.5 hours. Sometimes they ask… the place is that busy..ummmm… that good!
We are so lucky to have something so good for almost 20 years.
Nostra… enjoy it!!

December 19, 2007 at 8:42 PM #121124PCinSDGuestI haven’t been to Sushi Ota yet. After reading this thread I googled them and found a site that has several pages of customer reviews:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/sushi-ota-san-diego
Other than nearly unanimous agreement about the excellent quality, there does seem an unusually large number of customers that thought it sucked. For reasons other than the quality of the sushi. And most of those, justified or not, thought the service was terrible and felt that Asians received better treatment than non-Asians. After reading those reviews, regardless of the quality, probably not a place I’d enjoy.
I’ve only been eating sushi for a few years, so I’m still a novice, but my favorite sushi joint is Ichiro’s on Convoy. I only sit at the sushi bar. Michael (white guy) knows what he’s doing. Very friendly, lived and trained in Japan, speaks fluent Japanese. Interesting life story if you start up a conversation with him when it’s not too busy. Definitely not a poser.
