OT: Steve Jobs

Although the AAPL stock shrug off the news today, corporate America has lost its best CEO. I am not that a huge fan of Apple products, but I really admire Steve Jobs achievements, where he disrupted the computer industry, the movie industry, the music industry and the wireless industry.

It is true that part of it is probably luck because at the beginning of this century, Apple is uniquely positioned as a designer and integrator of both hardware and software to meet the consumer demand (other firms only specialize in one area). But it would be foolish to think that having both hardware and software group can bring out the Apple magic, as Google apparently did recently with the purchase of Motorola Mobile. And Amazon is rumored to enter the tablet market as well to take advantage of its strength in the cloud business. They need to look no further than the demise of RIMM.

Charles Golvin of Forrester, a research firm, says that one of Mr Jobs’s greatest skills has been to decide which projects the firm should not undertake. Unfortunately, that is just something that Google is very poor at. If any thing is needed at Google, rather than a hardware division, they need their own Steve Jobs.

The fact that apple sued samsung and has a injunction on the galaxy tab from being sold in parts of Europe should say something about apple. Apple isn’t taking this android invasion lightly.

For some reason, I never found Steve Jobs’ story especially inpiring. If Apple did not create those electronics, some other company would.

I think that George Soros’ work with Russia and Eastern Europe is more significant to human history.

Bill Gates’ work in the field for world health is so much more significant.

Well, that is exactly the point. Other companies DID create those electronics before Apple. But they created abysmal pieces of electronic trash. There were MP3 players, smartphones and tablet computers all before Steve Jobs and Co. decided they would make the iPhone, iPad and iPod. Apple has always been about doing something, but only when they are capable of doing it right. It’s not what you do – it’s what you DON’T do that defines you.

I only hope that Tim Cook and the rest of the team at Apple can continue creating devices that just work for years to come.
