I enjoy traveling for many reasons, but one of the benefits is that I can see my life from almost a third person perspective. When I am out of town, I can ponder my job, home, friends from a very detached viewpoint…it reallly feels like I can contemplate things more objectively.
Don’t know if you remember it, but back in the 90s there was that woman in san Marcos who shot her sons to death because she was mad at her br, their father. That put me into a severe funk I just could not pull out of. I lost interest in darn near everything. My wife talked me into a trip out of state and as soon as we arrived at our destintion I began to feel better. I could look at it from a detached perspective and not become so emotionally attached to it. The whole topic still tugs at my heart and I still think of those boys every time I drive by that house, but that trip really helped me get back on track by seeing things in an almost third person perspective. I realized I had to get on with life.

If you’re looking for a mate you must go out.
Otherwise, why?[/quote]
Maybe you just need a few vacation ideas, for example this summer I’m going on a Bigfoot Expedition.

We’re going to yellowstone, glacier, & grand teton this summer.
It’s *not* cheap.
But I did a spreadsheet (because of my nerdliness) and determined driving there in my own car, even with $5 gas, was the cheapest.I priced airfare w/rental car & in-park ‘rustic’ cabins.
I priced renting an RV from here and driving/campgrounds.
I priced airfare w/rv rental/campgrounds up there.Driving won by a lot. But it made us push the trip longer to justify the 2 days to get there and the 2 days return.
It’s not cheap. For our family of 4 it will be well over 3k, assuming $5/gallon gas.

I agree that it is usually MUCH cheaper to drive your own vehicle and and camp (if possible). Public campground cabin-rentals tend to be priced cheaper than surrounding hotels or if they are comparably priced, you will be able to sleep 8+ in a “rustic cabin” and cook there as well (MORE $$ saved) as opposed to cramming 4 people into 2 queen beds in a hotel room. Yes, even at $5 per gallon! I haven’t checked but I believe gas in WY should be about $3.60 to $3.80 gal and in UT slightly higher than that.
Some of the best vacations I have had have been when we rented log cabins at large lakes in the southwest and went boating every day (brought our own boats). One time we had a cabin that slept 8 and one time we had one that slept 12. It doesn’t cost that much more gas to bring your own boat, either.
Not a suggestion for you, UCGal. It’s too cold to waterski in WY, lol :=]

No Geisers here. And I get to show my kids the little 1 room cabin my dad lived in for a summer at Bowman Lake (Glacier National Park) He spent a summer in college working for the NPS clearing trails. No running water, he actually dug the pit toilet there. But a view that was INCREDIBLE. He spoke often of how neat that summer was.
Can’t show them that from here.
April 17, 2012 at 6:08 PM #741821desmondParticipantThere’s nothing wrong with a “Staycation” as long as you get out of the house. You don’t have to go far in California to enjoy yourself & family. Here’s my latest video, less than 20 minutes from my house:

April 17, 2012 at 9:39 PM #741826sdrealtorParticipantThat looks more like an escape route than a staycation. You live 90 minutes from the nearest “Big City” and that “Big City” is Bakersfield.
