It’s so dang sunny in so cal. I haven’t had any skin cancer yet but I’m definitely concerned.
The best hats I’ve found are Tilley hats. I have a few. Really expensive but washable and high quality.
I’ve also recently taken to wearing Palestinian made keffiyehs, the Hamas headwear, but made in the last Palestinian factory. No Chinese knockoffs
Hirbawi is the name. So awesome.
I had been very pro Israel up until a few weeks ago when I had a sudden epiphany and am now pro Palestine, which led me to hirbawi, which is why I now often look like an afghan rebel.
If you have other sun precaution gear that’s good, let me know
since I use to enjoy hikes in interesting hot regions here in North America (i.e. Death Valley, the grand canyon, down in baja, etc.) as well as abroad,… learned long ago that Arab head covers were indeed very practical
if you’re cloth head covers, you might find this interesting

(I have a few myself)
PS something to consider chemical sunscreens aren’t that good for the environment

No on the rothco. Imitations. Buy only original Palestinian head wraps from hirbawi factory in Palestine. Last keffiyeh factory in palestine. Not ripoffs.
September 13, 2021 at 8:27 PM #823181svelteParticipantI’m on the verge of changing my entire look. What once worked is now boring. I’ve been trying baseball caps and they are a nice change, but not quite me. Plus when we go out, a third of the males have them on…not exactly unique though I seek out unusual ones.
I like this guys look. Might change the glasses a bit. Plus I am much much paler than him. Still might work though. Or I could end up looking like where’s waldo. nah, I’ve gained too much weight for that.
re: skin cancer. I’ve heard from many that often it takes decades between excessive overexposure and skin cancer. I’m probably low risk then as I didn’t get a whole lot of sun in my younger days. Lived in humid locals and was too much of a computer and book nerd. Plus I tended to be a night owl. On the plus side, my skin hasn’t turned to leather yet.

I lived the first 21 years of my life in Tucson and almost never used it. I was in the sun all the time and never wore a hat. I grew up with the understanding that skin cancer is much more common in people that have had one or two very bad sunburns than in people who are exposed to the sun alot. I did have one bad sunburn ( at altitude, not in Arizona ).
I don’t use it in the winter at all and my philosophy is to use sunscreen pre-summer if I am going to be out for a long time but the goal is always to develop a tan because melanin is your body’s way of protecting your skin from the sun. So I manage my sunscreen use such that I get enough sun to tan but not burn. Late in the Summer, I should be tan enough to spend a couple of hours in the sun without getting burned.
I have blonde hair but am able to develop a tan. For those who just don’t tan and you need to / want to be outdoors in the sun, then sunscreen is the only way to go.
There are people who use sunscreen because they have fair skin but the reason they have fair skin is because they use sunscreen all the time.
October 2, 2021 at 6:55 PM #823314flyerParticipantBoth my wife and I are fair, she’s blonde and I have dark hair. We both have blue eyes, so we’ve always been prime candidates.
No matter how busy we are otherwise, we still always spend a lot of time outside, and have always taken extreme precautions to make sure we aren’t damaging or aging our skin, and yet, we’ve both had a skin cancer on our legs. We think the overexposure may have happened when we were in HI for an extended period of time, and may not have paid as much attention as we should. Thankfully, it wasn’t Melanoma.
Both of us were Stage 0, (another good reason for seeing the Dermo every year, if you’re prone) and we’ve both had Mohs surgery at Scripps, with no recurrence.
If you’re outside much, or cancer is in your family, or you see anything unusual on your skin–surprisingly skin cancer is not just brown or black, it can be pink, red, purple, etc.–be sure to see your Dermo.
October 5, 2021 at 5:03 PM #823324gzzParticipantFlyer, most skin damage leading to cancer happens in childhood, even though the cancer is decades later.
One very bad sunburn from an unprotected 4 hours in direct sun increases risk far more than a year of light tanning.
Many cosmetics increase risk of sunburn. The two most common offenders are alpha hydroxy acid and salicylic acid. Anything that exfoliates too, as the outer dead layer of skin protects the rest from burn.
The FDA has a suggested warning on photosensitizing cosmetics but does not require it. One of my public interest lawsuits involved such a product and I learned a huge amount about skin cancer and sunburn, but confidentiality means I cannot name it or discuss details.
Almost all whites will have many skin cancers by old age, but the immune system usually catches and destroys the cancers before they are ever detected. An illustration of this is people with damaged immune systems from AIDS get Karposi’s sarcoma, a viral induced skin (and elsewhere) cancer that a healthy immune system is easily able to destroy.
Conversely over avoiding the sun causes depression, sleep disorders, and immune system dysfunction. It also prevents the light tanning that protects the skin and makes the very unhealthy peeling sunburns more likely.

Yes, everyone in our families have spent a lot of time outside all of our lives, but wouldn’t change any of it–too many wonderful things to experience. We both still look younger than we are, so I guess some of our efforts paid off, and the we’ll keep seeing the Dermo on a regular basis.
