The shooter is obviously a schizophrenic (undiagnosed). Socially inept, interested in philosophy, etymology, politics – not interested in helping the broken world but motivated to create chaos and destruction instead. Nihilism, detachment, disillusionment, loneliness – these are his four walls.

I think my first impression nailed it His friend in the article mentioned that “Mein Kampf” was probably a joke just to “push peoples buttons”. I actually had thought that as well because it just did not seem to fit.
Exclusive: Loughner Friend Explains Alleged Gunman’s Grudge Against Giffords
Since hearing of the rampage, Tierney has been trying to figure out why Loughner did what he allegedly did. “More chaos, maybe,” he says. “I think the reason he did it was mainly to just promote chaos. He wanted the media to freak out about this whole thing. He wanted exactly what’s happening. He wants all of that.” Tierney thinks that Loughner’s mindset was like the Joker in the most recent Batman movie: “He fucks things up to fuck shit up, there’s no rhyme or reason, he wants to watch the world burn.
Loughner would also tell Tierney and his friends that life “means nothing,”
As Loughner and Tierney grew closer, Tierney got used to spending the first ten minutes or so of every day together arguing with Loughner’s “nihilist” view of the world.

You state the unfortunate truth. As a society we could hide the insanity with an economy that gave even the marginally sane a path to future success. That path is quickly evaporating.
When the marginally sane, lose any hope for economic success, are armed, and close to homeless – look out. Add drug use, and a real disparity between the haves and have- nots, this will not be the last insane act by an individual toward a politician. This was predictable. I can only hope that this does not trigger a rash of copy cats.
My only surprise is that it was not a banker that fell to the first shots. I see a world of the “haves” surrounded by private security trying to prevent the Inevitable
Good post.

You are making a pretty simplistic assumption in your prior post.
There is no dispute that communism has done more evil than any form of government in history. There are two reasons for this “success:”
One, communism is inherently prone to corruption and the system has no mechanisms to prevent concentration of power into a dictatorship.
Two, the communists won WWII. The cold war that followed, with the constant fear of nuclear escalation, gave the communists almost free reign to cause trouble around the globe.
Most of the horrors you reference happened post WWII, after every significant(i.e. industrial) right wing extremist government was defeated. After the war, the Nazis didn’t exist. The communists were stronger than ever.
If the political systems of WWII Germany and Russia were reversed, the outcome of the postwar years would not have been much different, except that Pol Pot would have been labeled an extreme “rightist.” But he still would have been an insane despot.
So I think you are making a fundamental mistake in your analysis:
There is no correlation between “body count” and the structural flaws of a political system. The reason communists have a higher body count than right-wing extremists is because history provided communists the circumstances to thrive.
We should fear both extremes.
