My 2 fav places in North County are – West Steakhouse and King’s Fish House(both in Carlsbad).
West has the best homemade Caesar dressing I’ve ever had(it’s the real deal with anchovies; very pasty and delicious)
King’s Miyagi oyster shooters are yum. They put 1-2 fresh shucked large oysters in a shotglass with minced cucumbers, ginger, roe and some others stuff in a vinegar sauce. Everyone I’ve taken there became hooked – even folks who were iffy on the oyster thing before going. Yum! Some of their stuff IMO is just OK/overpriced, but I always go there for shooters and soft shell crabs when in season.
Also: If you’re a real sushi fan and like huge portions of fish and are not averse to places that are not decorated all nicely or don’t have the best waiter service. You MUST try Sushi N Joy in Oceanside. It’s a married couple that run it, and they are the Sushi chefs – everyday all day(not sunday). Decor is a little tacky might look dirty, but it’s a great place to get a ton of fish from a real chef. He doesn’t focus on presentation, just fish quality and quantity. I’d reccomend sticking with the Nigiri and let it be known that you like fish.. he reads body language I believe to determine what type of preparation for each customer. I’ve had sushi hundreds of times from just about every place in San Diego.. and this is far and away my favorite. http://www.yelp.com/biz/sushi-n-joy-oceanside
